By 'wool type' I think you may mean stitchbond, which is a woven polyester which is often used on lower quality beds. I still can't find them on line.

The Staples bed is non turn, so is most likely to also be a lower quality bed, but it would be difficult to tell without having a look at the spec.

Where did you find both the beds?

http://www.excellent-relax.co.uk/windsor.html it has a damask cover.
This is the turn pocket sprung mattress at the Derby bed centre its excellent relax and windsor is the model not as previously posted.

I haven't heard of Relax Bedding. However there are around 50 bed companies in the Yorkshire/Lancashire area (I deal with 7 of them).

The Relax mattress appears to be far higher spec than the Staples Mattress. So out of the 2 I would go for that one, but keep shopping around on line as you can find much better prices.

    Hi Helen.

Micro quilting is where a layer of quilting is stitched to the back of the fabric that covers the mattress as shown on this photo: micro quilting. Micro quilting doesn't mean that it can't also be a luxury mattress. This next picture shows a top of the range mattress with micro quilting

With deep quilting, there is a deep layer of fillings between the cover fabric and the springs: deep quilting

Hand tufted mattresses usually have the deepest layers of quilting which are then held in place by cords that go through the mattress with soft felt washers at either ednd so that they don't feel uncomfortable: hand tufted

Then there is the flat top mattress. These are budget mattresses that contain minimal quilting: flat top

As for a luxury mattress, it can have any type of quilting, so it sounds like whoever gave you the choice was missleading you.
  • I'm about to place an order with Bensons for a Relyon Memory Foam 1250 (I think Advance may be in the name somewhere too but I've forgotten my bit of paper). It costs £600 in store until the end of the day and I was wondering if anyone knoews where I may be able to get it cheaper online. I've had a good look but with no joy, do Relyon produce the same mattress under a different name for other stores??

    Thanks in advance.

This post appears to be the same bed, so £299 on eBay? But not a glowing reference from the resident bed 'expert' Tim Deegan...

  • Thanks for that, mattress shopping is driving me up the wall now! I want a medium firm pocket sprung mattress with a memory foam top. It should be well made, with at least a five year guarantee and ideally available for delivery within a week. Budget is £600, any ideas anyone?

What are the trusted brands, what are the key things I should be looking for?

Maybe check the rest of that 70odd page thread...? Or do a forum search? I remember lots of recommendations about what makes to buy, and what makes a good mattress :)

    Points I can make are:

Pocket sprung, 1000+ spring count (King)
    Memory foam, 2-2.5" deep
    Turnable
Go local independant supplier if you want well made, others are more mass-production.
Take the guarantee with a pinch of salt, most are on a sliding scale system and you end up paying the price of the mattress for a replacement!

    HTH ;)

  • Cheers, looks like I have an evening of reading up on mattresses ahead of me!
