Remote Assistance Software

I spend a lot of time fixing problems on friends and families PCs. I'm looking for some robust remote assistance software that is reliable, will easily go through firewalls, and will get bypass routers.
I've been battling with Remote Desktop for some time, and have found that it's unreliable and is difficult to set up, especially where routers are concerned.
Is there a decent free piece of software that can be easily installed by a non-techie user at their end, which will allow me to easily access their PC remotely? Ideally I don't want to have to mess around configuring routers at their end. Does anyone do this kind of support and have any specific recommendations?

Lots of different options, even using Windows Remote Desktop Connection (RDC) through Messenger.
Plenty of third party ones to review, here's some to start with: There are many remote access / remote desktop packages out there, TightVNC, RealVNC, GoToMyPC, LogMeIn (free version and a more powerful commercial version available)

start with TightVNC and look further if it doesn't do what you want.0

Real VNC is good as is Hamachi

Crossloop has VNC embedded, and saves the hassle of configuring routers and bypass NAT.
OK it's not quite the fastest protocol for screen handling, but it is VERY easy to use.0 -

There is an option to reduce resolution for screen handling where slower connections are involved, it then works much faster. "Change Image Quality" in the menu. Try it next time for improved speed.... Can anyone explain to me how to put a signature here?

The cover disks on magazines often contain suitable software ... in fact this months Computer Shopper (issue 241 - March 2008) has a copy of LogMeIn on it
