Edinburgh Festival

Well...August is upon us soon and that means The Edinburgh Festival is upon us again. This year I am thinking of going up to Edinburgh one weekend to enjoy some of the Festival. (I've never been before) Any tips/suggestions on how to moneysave whlist enjoying it would be much appreciated. I see the prices are already going up as we get closer. Any cheap yet decent hotels that people can recommend or websites through which to get discounted hotels - plus cheapest airline flights if anyone comes across them?
Also - if anyone knows of anyway to get discounted entry to some of the popular shows/event......I would be very grateful.
Also when's the best time to go - beginning, middle or end of the festival?

there are a lot of free shows during the festival , usually not the peak time shows but still really good entertainment - there is a "metro fringe half price hut" which offers 50% off tickets on the day located in the princes mall shopping centre on Princes street.

there are a lot of 2for1 tickets available on the 7th and 8th August

On the 14th August "fringe Sunday" there is a huge garden party( approx 200,000 people) which is free

Try easyjet, ryanair etc for flights

most cheap hotels have been booked for months as have most of the dearer ones !

There is also an E-ticket booth for booking tickets , located next door to the metro hut.

There are always loads of street performances to keep you occupied during the day and evening.

try posting this on the Scotland board as well , where you might get some more info .

I LOVED the Edinburgh Festival when I went. I think my record was 8 shows in 2 days on the fringe - varying from free to £5 a ticket for those shows that I saw. I really broadened my horizons when I went there and it was a great atmosphere. I'd love to go again, but I don't have a friend's floor to bunk on this year.

Sorry, I'm not much help, but have a great time anyway.

If you haven't already book your accommo, do it now.

By the time the festival starts, there are NO BEDS WHATSOEVER left in Edinburgh and anyone who turns up always gets directed to accommo outside Edinburgh.

The population swells by 80% during festival time.

I agree with the weekend of 7th/8th for all the two for one shows, but the mid festival weekend always has a good vibe about it, or at the very end (there is also a huge fireworks display over edinburgh castle then - 45 minutes with the Scottish Chamber Orchestra providing the music)

Tickets for the tatto are sold out already, but you can sometime get the occasional cancellation tickets from the Tattoo office in Market Street.

Have fun, I always do, there's no point living in Edinburgh and not being part of the festival, it's my favourite part of the year !

Possibly booking a hotel/motel in Falkirk area or Livingston/bathgate area may be an option. These towns are around 15 miles outside Edinburgh but you can be in City Centre of Edinburgh in 25 mins by train .
Falkirk has a formulae 1 motel. Theres a travelodge and travel inn in Livingston, Holiday inn express in bathgate.

These hotels are tremendous value at only £23 pn per room !
From here you would probably be better using polmont train station as it's nearer.
