Canon MV600i Digital Video Camera - repair?

Hello

I've got a Canon MV600i digital video camera which needs repairing. I can switch it on but can't get a picture to display through the viewfinder or the pull out screen. I haven't got the lenscap on!! Any suggestions on what the problem could be and how to fix it, or alternatively any ideas on what the repair costs would be and where I could get it done? I'd love to be able to video my 8 week old daughter.

Many thanks

Jvc were repairing for free as they had faulty ccd's which caused the problem you were describing, worth a call to Canon though to see if they can do a free repair.....

  • Thank you for your help. Just checked the Canon website and it is a CCD problem!

Details below in case anyone else has the same thing...

    Solutions
Thank you for using one of our Canon products.
It has been found, that in rare case, some of the CCDs, used in Canon digital camera and digital video cameras, have a problem that causes abnormal image output.

We apologise for any inconvenience this may have caused. Canon will offer free repairs where an error is caused by this malfunction.

Canon would like to advise our customers of the details of this issue and our policy for handling it.

    Problem details:
Among the CCDs used in the affected products, it has been confirmed that in extremely rare cases, under high-temperature/high-humidity environments, some of the internal wiring comes off.

If this defect occurs, the signal is not output from the CCD correctly when in shooting mode. This results in image abnormalities such as:
    Images do not appear
    Image colors are abnormal
    Images appear distorted
These symptoms can be confirmed on the LCD monitor.
    Solution:
We kindly request users who have confirmed these symptoms to contact the nearest Canon Service Centre.

Free repairs will be made for affected products in cases where it has been confirmed that the internal CCD wiring has come off.

The mv600i is an old camera (over 5 years old to be precise!) I wouldn't worry about getting it repaired now - they also suffer from a tape loading fault that usually manifests itself after a few years use. There are some great deals to be had on standard def miniDV cameras at the moment, and they give the best picture quality - better than DVD/HDD cams. Check out Argos/Currys for any deals. Stick with a well know brand like Sony/Panasonic - JVC's don't have viewfinders, but otherwise are OK. In a few years time, we will all be going hi-def and HDD/solid state cams will be the way to go, but until then stick with tape.
