copying from old machine to new machine without XP

Hi there I have got my new computer now and want to copy from my old computer to my new computer.

The thing is the new computer has installed xphome sp2 but so has my old computer so how do I copy everything except xp from my old computer?

I am going to copy onto my external hard drive then onto my new computer.

Advice on how to do this with appreciated.

thanks

Paul

Use the File and Settings Transfer Wizard (Accessories, System Tools, I think). It provides information about the various ways you can connect the PCs together, and will guide you through the process.

Remember you need to install your programs again, you can't just copy them accross :)

Yes, if you're happy that it will just copy across your personal files, favourites, etc - but not the applications that you may have installed.

It's fine if you want to buy into the Micro$oft philosophy that you have to buy their software again every time you get a new PC, and throw away the money you paid for the OS and applications on the previous PC.

Then again, you could join the Open Source movement and not have that problem...

Not really. If you reinstall your software you don't have to buy another license at all. For instance if you have a copy of MS Office and its licensed for one computer if you uninstalled it and reinstalled it on another computer I don't believe you'd be breaking any licensing terms as you've only got one copy for your own personal use.

What rubbish, and totally irrelevant to the OP.

Yes, you're right - sorry, I was having an (almost ) irrational anti-M$ moment.

I say ~almost~ because it ~does~ apply to the OS, but not the apps. Well unless the supplier bundled the apps (MS word, etc) onto the HDD drive without giving you a CD with them on. In which case you can't reload them on a new machine. But then that would be the supplier's fault, I guess.

What exactly do you mean by programs you have downloaded? You have downloaded programs from the Internet? I hope they are freeware or shareware.
