im due to move house in 4 weeks and trying to find the cheapest option to get all my stuff into my new home, i believe the cheapest option will be to hire a van, i need to if possible move all the stuff in 1 go as im moving 80 miles away, i have a 3 bedroom house so have to get all the contents and the kids bits in, do you think a luton van would hold all this? surely somebody has moved themselves before any help would be gratefull, cheers

I wouldn't think 1 Luton would be enough, but it's always difficult without seeing the amount of stuff to be shifted. Don't forget to consider the amount of stuff you have stored in your roofspace, shed and garage, and what you are taking from your garden ie benches, tables, pots and gnomes.0

I moved from a 2 bed house about a month ago, and I was kind of 'lucky' in having to move twice effectively as we sold and completed about a month before the new place was finished.
I hired a Luton to do the first stage of the move and even though only 30 miles, I made more trips than I thought possible to shift the gear. That made up my mind for the big move (about 100 miles) - and I hired a 7.5 tonner for the weekend. One Yorkie™ Bar (I negotiated that on to the rental contract as well as £100 off the rental price) and one round trip later the whole shebang was moved in one go.
The only consideration I had was which way to take the large van from A to B - and concluded that a slightly longer route was better as long as it was less twisty - this might be something worth scoping out ahead of time (remember you're potentially driving a huge vehicle - versus your car at least - probably with air brakes rather than fluid brakes etc - which will take some getting used to)There are 10 types of people in the world, those that understand binary and those that don't
In many cases it helps if you say where you are - someone with local knowledge might be able to give local specifics rather than general advice0 -
Have you thought of using a small local firm? When we moved we used a guy who did the move just him and his son in a Luton van, it was about £125 I think and they needed two trips, although the second trip the van was less than half full. It might work out slightly cheaper for you, plus less hassle of a) moving the stuff all on your own and b) having the hassle of driving the van and having to get it back on time, etc.0

Do you have any friends with vans or large people carriers / cars that they arent too precious about?
On my last move, we arranged a convoy of friends and hired one van, a few beers and some food and a nose at my new house, made my friends happy enough to help..And they made the whole thing more fun.0 -
I moved recently 3 bed to 3 bed about 5 miles away. It took about 5 trips and 7 hours in a luton and there were 3 of us; if I could get more hands I would. Now you might have very few things, but I reckon you are going to need a bigger boat...I mean van and at least 4 to 6 helpers"enough is a feast"...old Buddist proverb0

we had a luton van but we also had the luxury of two days to move in, it took us 4 trips and that van was full every time we had 4 of us doing the hard work, i never realised we had so much stuff! as we are about to do it all again we are getting more friends to help and hireing a 7.5 tonne van!!!
good lucklife is what you make it. . . a bit like playdough. just don't squeeze it to hard!0 -
did anyone watch property ladder (not tonights - last weeks??) last tuesday?? One of the women on there was moving herself from a 3 bed place - what a nightmare! Personally, id pay not to have that kind of hassle. Surely you can find a cheap one somewhere?#KiamaHouse0
