HSBC rant - Unbelievable!

  • Lol cheeky!

The job I'm doing at the moment means that I'm responsible for getting the milk for the office every morning so I stop at Waitrose on my way to work to get said milk (of course I get this back on my expenses as a cheque- relatively easy to pay in as long as your bank is open!) which costs about 76p. Counting this out in small change would annoy me, the people in the long long queue behind me and the shop assistant! So I'm destined to have loads of small change for ever...

So they're not impulse purchases! So there :p

hhhmmmmm...... this is not a scientific assessment, but I think it would take no longer to count out change than it would for other customers to pay by card. And, let's face it, the vast majority pay by card, so I really don't see that you would be holding up others ;)

It rather depends on the change you have, but I wouldn't imagine that you need to count out 76p in copper, only. Surely you would have some silver in your change too .....? :p

You should suggest to work that they have milk delivered - then you are not subsidising them, by carrying the cost of the milk until they reimburse you ;) and you would not have "the change" problem ;):D Either that, or ask them to advance you the cost of the milk from petty cash. If they have none, they can either put petty cash in place or your cash-rich boss can fork out the 76p and then have the hassle of claiming it back via a cheque :D
    Warning ..... I'm a peri-menopausal axe-wielding maniac ;)
  • i work in a small branch of HSBC (two of us) - we have a counter service. we take coin if its bagged up correctly, and if its a large amount we will ask that it's paid into an account. however, some branches just don't have the space to take it, and some branches don't have a counter service at all - BUT, most BANKS will normally. OP was just out of look at not reading the info properly, as HSBC for definate do state these things on branch information.
and yes, the larger branches mostly do have the coin emptying machines, which will operate on a saturday
total debt at dec 07 -8713.56
    DFD dec 2010
paid so far? 0 (starting in jan 08)
  • Quick suggestion: When I'm converting my small change into notes, I go to my local Sainsburys where there is a converting machine that takes my coins and gives me a receipt to claim at the tills. They do charge a small fee, but well worth it when I can never get to a bank during the week, and the facilities at the banks aren't available on the weekends.

Similarly, it would take no longer to count out change than it will take for the shop assistant to count the change to give you...;)

On the subject of avoiding accumulating small change, the Mail on Sunday last week had an article called ‘Goodbye wave to small change’ in their financial section (p85). It was about a new ‘Tap-and-Go’ card that is effectively like a debit card for carrying out transactions for £10 or less. Shops have a special reader and ‘there is no need to enter a pin so the transaction takes seconds’ (you do have to enter a pin if you spend over £10). This system at the moment is restricted to 3000 terminals in Central London ‘but in a couple of years the technology will be commonplace on every high street.’ Will this really mean no more loose change in our purses, pockets and piggy banks?!,,,,

  • It was already mentioned on this thread earlier on and nobody but me I think commented on it. I just think it's another card to carry and something else to worry about if transactions go wrong. The banks can't protect cards that are around now so this won't be any different.

As has been said, I mentioned the rollout of PayPass and payWave (in post 48)

Its currently available/on trial in Central London and is being rolled out nationally this year - the system is already being used in some other countries.

If you have ever seen a 'Oyster Card' (used for London Transport), it works just like that.. and like 'Chip and Pin', the banks will be gradually replacing everyone's debit and credit cards to support the feature (your card just gets a new logo)

Of course, there are going to shops which still won't accept cards or will but charge extra or only above a certain amount.. so cash isn't going anywhere..

    Regards
