Carolinosourus explained it all very well, but I'd just like to add that where it lists the different prices you can click on the kind of fare it is and see what restrictions apply. Generally I find there's not much difference in the restrictions on the different grades of FirstMinuteFare, but you can only get the cheapest ones well in advance, and they're not always at times when you want to travel.

For example, DS2 needs to get from Bristol to Weston-super-Mare one day in Feb, and could do so for ridiculously low prices, but not if he wants to be there on time or come home promptly.

k i think i got it. my sis just wants to come home no particular time so the cheapest is best hope she has to wait ages for her changes!
