It's not oem, but possibly suffering from the same issues. Actually written on the disk "not OEM" appart from anything else it's the upgrade dvd not the full version, you don't get upgrade oem.
Anyway, I'm now getting help from microsoft direct, they didn't even know what the problem was. Told me to do the same thing as suggested on here, which I did again, just to site exactly the results, then they tried it themselves and confirmed as I already had.
Now they say they'll contact me tomorrow with a solution.
Well here goes.
I'll keep people informed, slightly worrying that MS don't even know themselves, but they are looking into it at least. Good job you get 90 days free support! There is no intelligent life out there ... ask any goldfish!0 -
Finally got microsoft to admit they don't know what is going on. Told me to go back to the suppliers. If all else fails I can always download it?There is no intelligent life out there ... ask any goldfish!0

Hi Horlock have you looked at the DVD in Explorer and read the files names and directories. They may indicated what is on your Student Upgrade Disk....Rich people save then spend.
Poor people spend then save what's left.0 -

Sorry it's taken me so long to respond, life has been really hectic.
Anyway, microsoft have written to me telling me that I can buy the disk for £3 by going to the same site that everyone else says, so even after admittting on the phone they have no idea they now say that I can do what I clearly can't.
I really can't believe how incompetent they seem to be. Still tehre we go, perhaps I'll get somewhere, at least the company are offering me a full refund if I return the product. There is no intelligent life out there ... ask any goldfish!0 -
THERE IS ABSOLUTELY NO POINT INSTALLING VISTA x64 UNLESS YOU INTEND ON HAVING 4GB OR MORE RAM IN YOUR PC.
In fact, for 99.9% of the non corporate users, the only thing Vista x64 is going to do is drive them nuts when they find that there's no drivers for their hardware as x64 uses different drivers and, for example, things like my Hauppauge WinTV card don't have 64 bit drivers.
There is no performance advantage over 32 bit Vista with the same memory and it could be argued that actually 32bit graphics drivers for cards such as nVidia are more optimised than 64 bit ones due to the popularity of the OS.0 -

I have Vista Ultimate 64bit, and a Hauppauge card with 64 bit drivers. There are 10 types of people in the world; those who understand binary and those who don't...0 -
Fixed - for anyone else with the same problem just persevere with MS technical support. I've just been sent the 64 bit disc. It has installed perfectly and activated with my key. (didn't even require proof for upgrade - little bit odd me thinks). But I'm happy I now have 64 bit working all for the cost of £68. Bit of a bargain. There is no intelligent life out there ... ask any goldfish!0
