Travel Insurance for the over 80's?

Can anyone recommend an insurance company who provide travel insurance to people over 80 at a reasonable price? My Stepfather is 82 and currently pays £337 annually for travel insurance for him and my mother who is 76. Tried MSE search engine for insurance but the cut off point is 79. So far the only 2 companies I can find who will supply travel insurance for the over 80's is SAGA and AGE CONCERN who they currently insure with. If anyone knows of any other company I would be grateful to know. Thanks

It's a tough one. I booked a friends ticket through e-bookers on line. She was 74 and they charged her £119 for the 2 month trip to Jamaica. It was the best deal going.... Don't know about their over 80's policy

I managed to find them annual cover from CIS insurance (Co-operative insurance service). You have to join the Co-op as a formality, its free, then quote the membership number for the quote. The joint European Annual Cover cost £130 which I think is an excellent deal.
  • Jeff,
I tried the CIS site and can't see any travel insurance there! Called the local Coop travel agents, and they don't know about it either. Could you give some more details? Contact details? Or was it the Coop bank?

they seem to do VERY cheap insurance for 65-70's. For over 70's they give you a phone number - so it is worth a try:

"Please telephone 'MakeSure' on 01689 892253 to obtain a competitive Travel Insurance Quotation.

(MakeSure are specialists in providing travel insurance cover for those 70 years old or over and those with Medical Conditions) "
  • Worth trying these two places too:

    Delta Insurance: telephone 01304361609
    http://www.deltainsurance.co.uk/

    Go Travel Insurance: telephone 0870 152 5840
    http://www.gotravelinsurance.co.uk/

I'd be interested to know how you get on
  • Starblood, Jeff, and everybody interested,

My father called the CIS today, using the number Jeff gave me ( CIS insurance tel no is: 08457 46 46 46.) They asked some questions about my parents' health, which is reasonable for their ages, and gave a provisional quote of £120 for the joint annual European cover! This is a fantastic price compared with £180 each for a single trip (although it is for 6 weeks) from Age Concern, Saga or the Post Office. The CIS will send out an agent on Thursday, as it's easier for my parents to speak to someone face-to-face than on the phone. Also, I assume the agent will assess their health as well! I'll let you know how they get on.

Hi Dave Starblood & anyone else.
CIS ins offered to send out an agent to visit my parents too however I wanted to pay the insurance premium there and then so was asked if a doctor had advised them not to travel overseas to which the answer is no, so went ahead with payment over the phone, odd thing being CIS would not accept my credit card, its got to be the credit/debit card of the policyholder, anyway, its paid and the policy arrived in the post about 3 days later, annual European insurance cover, joint policy £120 and that is with 2 declarations, (Mother had a mild stroke 4 years ago and father is a hospital out patient for a condition). Great value for money if you ask me!

The phone number for CIS Insurance is 08457 46 46 46
  • Also consider the travel insurance on offer with banks' premuim current accounts.  smile and Co-op, through their smilemore and Priviledge accounts, offer annual travel policies for account holder & spouse for £6.00 and £6.50 per month respectively. These have no age restriction.  They even include ski cover for the young (at heart?).
    Ethical moneysaver
  • Hi!

Just to let you know how it turned out with my parents and the CIS. The agent came on Friday and, after checking their medical conditions ( my father has asthma and my mother has a heart condition) and referring to head office, came up with a quote of £124 for joint annual cover for Europe. My parents were delighted! They went to the travel agent (Coop Travelcare, would you believe, who did not know of CIS's deal for over 80s) and paid for the rest of their January 2005 holiday and also booked their January 2006 trip as well!

Thanks again to Jeff 121 for the information on CIS.

    Dave
