    Yes they can.

The first policy was to insure your Toyota for 12 months, which they did and you've benefited from the policy so it can not be cancelled.

The request to change the policy can be refused as they did not offer you cover for that vehicle when you purchased the policy, they may not cover that model/type of vehicle or may be a specialised insurer if you went through a broker.

Insurance is an annual contract except you were paying the cost by monthly instalments. When you claim the whole payment for the year is due.

I think where people get confused is that because they think that they are paying monthly that they can cancel the next month without penalty.

If you pay monthly some Insurers deduct the remaining instalments from the payout.

The Vitara is actually a very different proposition in terms of insurance to, say, a Yaris. It will be an increase of at least 4-6 vehicle groups. Vitaras are heavier (causing more damage if involved in an accident) and are not very secure as 4x4s go.

Each insurer will divide their motor portfolio into several different schemes, which will each have different acceptance criteria. You have bought a car that falls outside those criteria so unfortunately you cannot insure the Vitara on your previous policy.

The moral of the story is to call your insurer before purchasing a new vehicle.

As pointed out elsewhere, you incurred a claim under the policy therefore the full annual premium becomes due if you decide to cancel.

It is a bit odd but I've had similar things happen on a change of car when the insurance refused to cover the new car because, well "we don't insure this type of car". Also, read the small print on your insurance as some companies seem to sell you a policy that covers you for 12 months or until they write off the car so you actually may not have those four months credit/insurance anyway.

    I need some advice.

In December I wrote my little Toyota off (ice, no other cars), it was a 1.4 & I got the insurance for silly money, about £200 PA.

I had to get a new car that week (needed it to get to work).
    I bought a new suzuki vitara 3 door 1.6.

My insurance firm said they could not cover me on my new car, but I would still have to make my monthly installments up to the end of my insurance year (march 08).

Can they do that, refuse a fairly reasonable insurance request & still insist you carry on paying. I mean its a 1.6 vitara, not a porsche:rolleyes:

I'm now paying two lots of car insurance.

That's wrong. If the car has been written off and they have paid out then they can't tell you they want to keep charging you for it. As soon as the car is written off the insurance policy for that car ceases to exist!

It is not wrong. It is a standard term in motor insurance that if you suffer a total loss and claim from you insurance, then regardless of whether the policy runs to the next renewal or is subsequently cancelled, the full annual premium is due.

And if a car is a total loss then the policy does not necessarily 'cease to exist' either.

I think people need to be aware that paying monthly in not "pay as you go", it's simly credit for the full payment which is due up front.

I think the fact that some people pay monthly makes them feel like it's "pay as you go".
    It isn't.
You are paying off a loan of the money that was due at the beginning of the year.
