I have a Panasonic DMREX77, very pleased with it so far (have not played with it too much yet).

Amazon are selling them for about £220.00 (were £199 a few days ago).

    Panasonic are excellent machines.
It's PAC not PAC Code, it's MAC not MAC Code, it's PIN not PIN Number, it's ATM not ATM Machine, it's LCD not LCD Display, it's DVD not DVD disc... It's no one not noone, It's a lot not alot, It's got not gotten... Panini is the plural of panino - there is no S!!

Also consider the Topfield TF5800PVR 250GB Freeview Receiver with Twin Tuner for £199.

And the very good Humax PVR 9200T. You can get it for around £155 at Dixons (search for 440229), or possibly £10 off at Richersounds (pricematch plus £10 off).

As always, read independent reviews/comparisons before purchasing. G

Another good point about the Panasonic DMREX77 is that it will record from Sky TV, I understand that some of the others will not allow this.

If they are Freeview PVRs then it's unlikely they will record from an external source.

If the are DVD / HDD recorders with a Freeview tuner, then they are most likely to record from an external source too, such as Sky Digital.

  • I have just bought a sony hxd970 with 250GB and freeview. I really like it but I'm not sure about all the capabilities. They are on amazon at £229.99. My mate who works for sony centre says that even with staff discount he couldn't get that price. They are doing the 160GB version for £208.99.

The Sony and Panasonic's get the best reviews for the DVD recorders with hard discs, have a look at the reviews table at the back of any good TV/Home Cinema magazine in the newsagents...

Also https://www.avforums.com has many threads and advice on the subject.
