any help on this pleaseThough the vision may not be the true future of man but it can't be completely beyond his control.0 -
You must use the ethernet cable port. This cable can be a max. length of 100metres. You buy from Maplins/B&Q. Its the straight through cable type, not a crossover cable. The price varies from store to store, get the cheapest you can & not more than £10. Make your own with skill and the correct tool but thats £20 on its own! The above stores will sell the plugs and cable, being the cheapest way for the parts. Also available (cheap)at the computer shows over the weekend in a town near you, or ask over in your freecycle group
The USB cable is not suitable over 3metres.
Your PC will need an ethernet card/socket.0 -

You can buy ready made extension cables quite cheaply e.g. here or just get some satellite cable and some F connectors. You would only need to use Ethernet if you need to leave the box where it is for cable TV reception. Blue text on this forum usually signifies hyperlinks, so click on them!..:wall:0 -
The cable between the box on the wall and the modem, is satelite quality coaxial (aerial) with 'f' connectors on both ends. The cable between the modem and the computer can be either ethernet (RJ45) or USB. To move the modem and the computer you can extend the coaxial. If you want to just move the computer use a longer ethernet cable between the modem and the computer.0

should say that cat5 (ethernet) needs to be standard not patched/crossover.
i would advise against extending the coax, its a lot more hassle and if done wrong can affect the signal strenght leading to cutouts/low download speeds.
20foot cat5 is under £10 these days and pretty much plug and play0 -
IIRC the coax is better than standard satellite* - although you can use satellite cable to extend it, you would be risking problems (and a charge from Virgin if they ever had to send an engineer out to sort a problem with your modem).
As Epz says a standard long ethernet cable is probably your best bet, you can get them cheap enough from various places (although postage tends to be high if it's ordered online).
*From memory it's a couple of grades higher in terms of protection from interference than the cabling normally used for satellite installs (unless the satellite installer is willing to pay for the better stuff, or is doing a very long run and needs it).0 -
Another option, although more expensive, is to get a wireless router and wireless card for your PC then it won't matter where in the house your PC is.It's my problem, it's my problem
If I feel the need to hide
And it's my problem if I have no friends
And feel I want to die0 -

I think that you have got this the wrong way round! Standard satellite double screened cable is much better than required for baseband TV/broadband distribution e.g. Virgin. No problems extending the cable, so don't rule this option out if this is what you wanted to do. Blue text on this forum usually signifies hyperlinks, so click on them!..:wall:0 -
Thanks all for your help, what i need to do is to extend the cable between the BB modem and the box fixed on the wall, so that the modem will be nearer to my P.C.
So is using the Coaxial cable the best option for a "wired connection" ???Though the vision may not be the true future of man but it can't be completely beyond his control.0 -
Yes, this is the way to go. You can get the sat grade coaxial and 'f' connectors from Maplin or any shop that supplies aerials. We have done this and have suffered no loss of signal or any other problem.0
