CD drive problem tying to run router set up CD

i'm trying to install my netgear router and I'm having a bit of a problem!!!

I've popped the installation CD in the drive as normal on my PC and nothing is happening, it makes a couple of halting quiet 'clunks' and the cursor adds the little CD icon for a couple of seconds on screen. I've tried it in my laptop and it fires up the installation menu, not a problem so obviously the CD isn't blank.

The first time I put it in my PC it brought up the first page of the installation process but after I pressed 'install now' nothing happened and now that doesn't even come up!! i've tried re-booting a couple of times - no joy.

Thinking my PC drive has had it, I've tried a random different disc and there are no problems with any other CD.

The netgear CD doesn't even register under My Computer as being in the machine otherwise i'd start the Wizard manually.

i'm a bit flummoxed

The netgear is a WGT624 v3 and the CD is the Resource CD Version 3.4.

Can anyone shed any light please??

You might be able to download the software direct from Netgear: http://kbserver.netgear.com/products/WGT624.asp

The CD could be faulty, as could your drive. You could also try copying all the files and folders from the CD to a temporary folder on your C drive, and running the set-up from there.

The software is usual just a wizard that connects to the router via a webpage and sets your settings, so nearly always you can set these up without any additional software, by pointing your browser to 192.168.0.1

You're probably right that the CD drive is on it's way out. They tend to be bad at reading low reflectivity CDs (CD-RW are typically the worst, with CD-R a little better) in the early stages of failure.

You can get round this by copying all of the files - including any hidden ones - onto a USB pendrive, and then just double-clicking on the installer (usually setup.exe or similarly named).

the problem is though, when I click on the E Drive (where the files would show up) the folder is blank - as if there is no CD in there?

I've had a look at the website but it only goes up to version 2............ooh, hang on, it's burst into life!!!!!

(I might be back in a minute though!!)
