Smaller breeds of dog are well known for having long lives - Poodles in particular can live in excess of 20 years. If this lady takes on a dog, are YOU prepared to make that sort of commitment? What happens when this elderly lady dies?
Please forgive me if my comments seem abrupt or my questions have obvious answers, I have a mental health condition which affects my ability to see things as others might.

maybe she would consider a rescue dog they may be able to match her up with a dog that needs very limited exercise

Greyhounds dont need a lot of walking and theres plenty in rescues. Most like nothing better then to spend their days curled up on the sofa

I second that :D I have 2 dogs and one of them is a grey and she loves to sleep and they don't need huge amounts of exercise, however as commented above, all dogs need the stimulation of some exercise and socialistion, even oldies. In your neighbour's case, it sounds as if an older dog would be more suitable though, a dog who's been there and done that and is now happy to curl up in front of the fire with a daily walk to stretch his limbs.

It would be cruel to confine any dog to an indoor way of life. If walking the dog for your neighbour is really going to cause a problem then perhaps she should consider a cat? Much more independent and it can come and go as it pleases.

A Pug. Whatever you do, don't get Jack Russells, they ALWAYS want walking, and when they come back from a long walk their batteries are re-charged and all they want to do is play/run about! My next dog will be a Pug. Definitely.:p

My pug always wants too go on a walk and a long one at that.

All dogs need to get out of the house, even if they don't nesessarily need a lot of walking. They need to socialise in different surroundings and with other dogs and people. If you do not let your dog do this then he will have absolutly no social skills if you find you do ever have to take him out.
Sit in a small room with no tv, radio, pictures to look at for a few hours and you will be bored to tears in no time - this is what making a dog stay in 4 walls will do and you will cause a multitude of behavioural problems.

I'm not trying to judge, it's just I have written all about the importance of socialisation and play for my canine psychology course and you don't want to be stuck in a house with an unsocialised dog.

As some people have mentioned, maybe a greyhound, or a whippet if you're after a smaller breed. Personally I dont think its a good idea for the lady to have a dog if she cannot walk it. If the lady has a garden a more sedentary breed of dog might suit, but can you imagine the state her garden will get into with all the mutt poos? Also, even a more quiet dog (or cat) might be likely to get under the lady's feet and trip her up...my dog always wants to stand by your legs and is constantly tripping us up.

DenBo - have you stolen my dog?? Hes a jack/staffy cross - he looks liek a jack with the bulkiness fo a staff. Hes a terror - he goes for 2 sometimes 3 small walks a day (10 - 15 minutes each) and then an hour long walk int he middle of the day (approx 1pm) and hes still bouncing round liek a loony even if ive run him ragid.
