There's no tube at Gatwick but the train from the airport goes straight into London. From there, you can pick up the tube to City Road. Its near Old Street on the Nothern Line. You shoudl be able to buy a train ticket at the airport which goes from Gatwick and also covers the tube part of the journey too.

You'll need to get the "First Capital Connect" Service which will probably be the train with "Bedford" or "Luton" as it's end destination. You should be able to get off at London Bridge where you can then head down to the underground (follow the signs - but basically you go down a ramp at the front end of Platform 6 and then straight down the escalator almost directly in front of you, past the bagel stand into the main underground station). Hop on the Northern Line going North. Old Street is only a few stops. As the previous poster says, at Gatwick get a ticket that includes your tube journey as well. Do not get a Gatwick Express ticket as it is more expensive and takes you to Victoria which is out of your way. The journey from Gatwick to London Bridge is usually only about 25 mins and during the day the trains go regularly. At night there may only be 1 or 2 an hour. Do check the train information in advance on the internet as there are sometimes engineering works on that part of the line - especially on Sundays.
Yeah, whatever. I'm a grown up, I can take it...
