need some photoshop help please

hi im trying to teach myself photoshop lol

i have a background image and im trying to put another image on top so you can still see the other one underneath. i need to resize the image im placing on top though and make the bits of that layer where there is no picture see through so you see the image underneath.

maybe if i explain what im trying to do (sounds gruesome but...) i have a pic of dripping blood i want to impose over another picture to make it look like the blood is dripping down the thing in layer 1

thanks in advance (as always)

    What version of Photoshop?

You can set the transparency of the layer above, by altering the opacity slider in the layers palette.

If you double click the layer in the layers palette, you can set the blend options too.

sounds like you need to merge the layers.

    Hi

I have been teaching myself Photoshop for a while now but always seem to find something new :)

You don't mention which version you are using - I use Photoshop CS2 and here is how I can do what you ask:

    open both images in photoshop
with the image you want on top (the blood) press Ctrl + A to select all then Ctrl + C to copy.
Now go to the other image and click Ctrl + P to paste
this pastes the image as a new layer on top which you can select and resize with the "move tool"
Now to adjust the transparency look at your layers window - double click on the image of the blood in the layers window to get the "layers style" options
there should be a slider in the middle of this window under "advanced blending" - moving this should do what you need.

Sorry for the long winded answer, hope it helps.

Only merge the layers at the final moment if you want to create a JPEG or other file, otherwise you'll loose the editing of the independent layers and can't get back to the original separate images without starting again!

Preferably always save a version in the Photoshop format with all layers intact so you can edit it at a later stage.

Use the Transform tool to resize and scale the layer you want too.

    (wow my 1000th post! :) )

there are thousands of sites on the net that show you how to do PS layers and masks.
once you can do them, a whole new world opens up.
