My dad always wants a basic phone too, he just gets my handme downs he curently has my old Nokia 8310.

If the person has sight problems and wants a phone I can recomend the Emporia Life phone we bought one for my Gran before christmas she is older and just wanted a basic phone that she could see better than everything else on offer.

Little John - interesting to hear from someone that has actually handled one of the Emporia phones. What do you reckon of the build quality and ease of use?

I must confess that we bought a cheap phone for my Dad (can't remember for sure but think it might have been by Thomson) and the menu system was baffling and completely illogical. I wish we had paid more for something a bit better, but he only switches it on when he's on holiday, and then he hardly ever hears if it rings!

That sounds just like my DH. He has to take one for Health & Safety sometimes but doubt he would know what to do in an emergency. I've tried to train him but he's not rung me in two years!

The one I bought has bigger, single buttons - not joined together, IYSWIM which are better for his big hands, well in theory.

My DD might make the odd post for me

For what it does the life phone is brilliant, it is very plasticy but the build is quite good, better than some of the newer phone sI have handled.

The display is great and my gran can read it. the menu is a little confuseing, mainly becasue you onlly get the menu when the phone is opened even though the buttons to navigate are on the front. and it does some strange things occasionally.

I couldnt get it to use the sim when we first got it but removeing an reinserting a few times sorted that out.

I've just bought my Dad a nokia 6230 for christmas. It's a great little phone that does everything and even has a good camera, pretty easy to work.
