Connecting Xbox to LAN :(

I'm trying unsuccessfully to connect my Xbox to my PC. The xbox shows an IP address but I can't ping that from my PC through the router. The Xbox is not shown in my router's DHCP client list, but as I say, it obtains an IP address so there's some conenction there somewhere. Any ideas anyone? Thanks.
