I am totally confused by IPs.
I am on Virgin and have a 'static' that just never changes.
Is there any way to hide it or force it to change? Its got to be a UK Ip though I think.
thanks

doubtful you have a static address. just log off and logon an hour later. you should have a new IP addy.
if you have a router, make sure you switch it off!
(at night/early AM you may find you get the same IP addy back).Get some gorm.0 -

Any particular reason why you want to change it? Some people pay extra for a static IP (although strictly speaking yours isn't static).0 -
I'm with Virgin as well, with a router, both are switched off at night & I've had the same IP address for months, it did change a few months ago but went back to the original the day after & that's the way it's stayed ever since. I did think it was supposed to be dynamic instead of static but it's not a problem for me.
Op google the word anonymiser & you'll find something to help change it in the short term.Winnings

Its just the way it works.
When I was with Telewest, I had the same one for three years.0 -
Lucifer - your IP address probably is still "dynamic", and Virgin have simply assigned your address a very long "lease" of several - or possibly many - days. Typically if you happen to be online when the lease expires, you will just get the same address with another identical lease length. Only if you happen to be offline at the time is there a chance that someone else will get "your" address.
I'm just guessing, but I suspect that it's done to make surveillance and activity tracking easier to do, should they be asked to do so by the "relevant authorities".0 -
the isp,s can set the lease time as long as they want. and the reserve time.
ie BT used to be, after 15 minutes off line then it went into the pool of addys. in peak times you never got the same addy twice. at night you could get it back after some hours even.
most isp,s use 30 minutes or an hour. some use days.Get some gorm.0 -
a virgin IP lease is for 3 days, one way to get around this is to switch between ethernet and usb connection and after 3 days the ip will change, so if you unplugged ethernet for 3 days and plugged in usb then after the 3rd day swapped back to ethernet the ip will change and vice versa0

Have a look here.

What reason is there behind you wanting to hide or have a static IP address then p00?

I just get sick of seeing the same IP number all the time and fancied a change
Thankyou for your help. I'll try changing from USb to Eth and back as suggested. But I thought there were programmes so the "relevant authorities" couldnt track what you are doing in your spare time.
Not that I do anything sinister lol, just started doing a few daily click is all.
