Home made present ideas

I would like to make some presents for my family but not food.
Does anyone have any ideas of easy to make presents that I can make with my kids for people we love?
Thanks

    Hi Annie,

If you look through the threads listed in The Complete HM Gifts Collection you should get lots of ideas.

Crochet cushion covers, very easy, just do a very large granny square with odds of yarn, then repeat to the same size, to fit the cushion. Join 2 sides with doouble crochet and use ribbon or chain crochet for the 4th side to make ties. Jumble sales and charity shops usually have cushions.

Just before Christmas one of the papers [either the Observer or the Guardian] did a pull out article on homemade presents. One of the ideas was converting a hardback book cover into a double picture frame- the photos go on the inside and you stand it up like a book. Kind of hard to explain but they looked really effective plus you're recycling:D

Aiming for a life of elegant frugality wearing a new-to-me silk shirt rather than one of hair!

Was curious about your suggestion Aril, so went a googling..
is this the type if thing they did? Sure it can be made to look more effective than this example though, especially with a single picture & the book the right way round. AN appropriate titled book would make it even more effective.

Would homegrown herbs be a possibility? Eg. Use/empty a tomato soup tin carefully so as not to damage the lable, put some drainage holes and gravel/tiny stones in the bottom, fill with compost and sow some basil seeds.

I made some pot holders (like half an oven glove!) really easily a year or two ago. You can match the fabric to hobbies - I found lovely dark green material with gold musical notes for my musical son. It was very Christmassy looking which helped as it was a Christmas pressie! I also made a tea pot stand with the same material, which we use(actually come to think of it, it was my first attempt at the pot holder but came out too small!) DS made Oh and me a box for nick-nacks - he bought wooden pencil case/ boxes and covered OH's with stamps with trains on them and mine had beautiful little roses glued on. DD gave me a little book full of poems she'd chosen and written in. Both have made CD compilations which are great. oooh this has made me feel all crafty sport-smiley-001.gif

DH has brought me many Martha Stewart magazines and books from his work trips to the US. I am a complete fan and I've made many, many things from these and from her web site.

I find she always gives good instructions and detailed patterns when necessary.

This is the crafts homepage. The last thing I made was a bag using bias binding. I had some nice fabric and lots of binding I'd bought from a charity shop. The instructions were very clear and I made it quickly. It looks great and the pockets in the front are handy.

It is worth having a look.
