updates wont install

Hi
I have had to reinstall xp sp2 on my desktop and when i went to updates it listed 92 updates which downloaded but wouldnt install for some reason, the only thing it updated was windows installer 3.1. Also is it really neccesary to have m'soft .net framework 1.0 plus hotfix and 2.0 and 3.0 service packs as im sure this is somehow causing conflicts.
Any help would be great
thanks

generally you dont need .net framework.
but some sites/progs require its installed, otherwise they wont work.
its very rare now as the take up of MS .net framework by vendors was very poor.
    Get some gorm.
