Lavasoft problem?

Hi guys...everytime I put my PC on it says 'An unhandled exception occured at 0x1005E760 in aawservice.exe' in a box and then loadsa other bits of information.

I clicked the one to tell Lavasoft Ad-aware the problem, but it keeps coming back, so now I just clicked don't tell them...but it still comes up on the other screen names?

Will removing the problem solve this...? and is there a good alternative to spyware

Cheers

Try removing the program and reinstalling. The newer free version is Adaware 2007. Try Spybot.
    The man without a signature.
  • I went back to using Adaware SE version because of a problem but now it is showing no updates since 27/12. So not sure if to recommend this version or not. Any experts out there please?

    Un-install and get Spybot S&D - true freeware ;)

Thanks guys I have installed Ad-Aware SE....not too sure how it works though..i just got used to the 2007 one..can't be too hard!

But since it is 15 days old, is that a risk?

    Thanks

I just read that you can't get updates for Adaware SE any more, only for 2007... Running spyware checkers with an outdated signature file is similar to running a virus scanner with one and not really a good idea.

Spybot S&D is always a good recommendation but I noticed that using both did improve the results.

You can still use Ad-Aware SE and update the definition files manually.

I don't know how much longer this will be available, but might as well use it whilst you can.

On this page http://www.lavasoft.com/support/securitycenter/blog/ there is a link to the latest SE definitions (top right hand side), currently SE1R212 07.01.2008

This link downloads the latest defs.zip file from here http://download.lavasoft.com/public/defs.zip

Once downloaded, unzip to create defs.ref and copy this into the lavasoft folder under c:\program files, overwriting the existing defs.ref

HoofeHearted, that sounds good...however it also sounds very complicated...maybe it isn't, is there a step by step way...?

    Thanks

Take a deep breath and just do it:)

Download the file from here http://download.lavasoft.com/public/defs.zip

If you are using Windows XP then there is a built in unzipper (a .zip file is a compressed file, unzipping just means un-compressing a compressed file). Alternatively there are free unzipping programs available (just Google for them)

Once you have the defs.ref file (this is automatically created from defs.zip) copy it into the relevant folder to overwrite the existing one. To find the folder, locate the Ad-Aware SE shortcut on your desktop or Start-> All programs menu and right click it and select properties. When the new information window has opened, select the shortcut tab and then press the "Find Target" button. This will then open the folder where defs.ref resides. Just paste the new file there.

    Hope that helps.
  • Since first reading your post I decided to play. I uninstalled every adaware folder I had - I tend to download to named folders so I can chech easily on things! Anyway, having deleted the lot from 2005 onwards, I then downloaded Adaware 2007 to a memory stick (just in case!). I then copied to my desktop, double clicked on the desktop icon to install it and hey, there it is. I have since successfully updated the definitions files and scanned apparently successfully too. So can now happily say from own experience that this route works!! Good luck.:T
