Apparently none of these programs do a very good job, ie google/images get through Source PCW mag.20080

These programmes can be fustratingly dumb, blocking sites for containing words like !!!!nal (MSE will not let me write the real name of the Gunners as its too rude!) and Essex
Software based rather than hardware ones can be circumvented in a number of ways.

Actually its only if you bold the bit that says a r s e.
But I think that makes the point about the stupidity of arbitary filtering.
You might want to look here before buying as they show some of just the simple ways to get past this sort of thing:

That's before you strat worrying about how you are going to stop web browsing, IM and VoIP calls form mobile phone and game consoles connected by Wi-Fi, or just connecting to a Neighbours Wi-Fi etc. Etc.
Put your kids PC where you can see what they are doing on it. Talk to them about the risks of sharing information online etc. You cannot rely on brute force software to perform the delecate juggling act that is being a parent.0 -
If your slightly technical and can be bothered setting up the dynamic dns updater, then openDNS offers free !!!!!! blocking (and should make surfing a little quicker). It will also log all sites visted remotly.
not bad for free, and pretty good at blocking the hardcore stuff, but as always there will be banner ads and images slip through like on google.0 -
I've put Crawler parental control on the pc the kids use, if you take a bit of time to set it up it seems to work reasonably well and it's free.......Gettin' There, Wherever There is......
I have a dodgy "i" key, so ignore spelling errors due to "i" issues, ...I blame Apple

No need to pay for web filtering as K9 is free and does a superb job of protecting your kids from adult content, as well as blocking harmful sites that may infect your computer. http://www1.k9webprotection.com/0

I too tried Net Nanny and found that it didn't block everything.
It also took me months to view the list of blocked sites just to see how inappropriate they were!I can spell - but I can't type0 -
What about stoping an adult uising inappropriate sites

I put a filter on the pc oonce before when there was someone staying here and i found something unopleasant...but it stopped nearly everything :eek:Member no.1 of the 'I'm not in a clique' group :rotfl:

You could change your dns setting to point to these people
http://www.opendns.com/
"OpenDNS protects millions of people a day across hundreds of thousands of schools, businesses and homes as they navigate the Internet. We block phishing sites and give you the power to block adult sites, proxies and individual domains."
Its what I use and it works very wellLooking to raise some money
