creating a bootable data cd

Hi,

I hope you dont mind me asking for help again :D

I am trying to copy a disc that i use to boot into my work server but there is something missing and I cant work out what it is.

My laptop does try to boot into it but only comes up with a black screen with some text on it saying that it is booting and might take several minutes.. nothing happens though:confused: Is there something I need to make it launch or something? Maybe, there is something I should be typing in the black screen were it says A:/ ?

Oh, its a linux based system I am trying to boot into if that makes any difference and I am using NTI cd and dvd maker to create the disc.

I hope someone can help me with this, its been driving me crazy all day!

Thanks,

MBM x

Your question is a bit confusing. Are you saying that you are trying to make a copy of a CD that you know is bootable, but the resulting CD is not bootable?

If you need to do this via an intermediate step (e.g. you don't physically have the source CD and need to send the contents, perhaps via file transfer) then the thing to do is to make an ISO image of the original CD, and then at a later stage, burn the new CD as an image from the resulting file.
  • Sorry about being confusing :o

I do have the cd but i copied the file on to my pc and then used NTI cd and dvd maker to try and create the data cd.

How do I make an ISO image of the disc?

    Thanks for your help

Ok, I think I understand. The original CD almost certainly has hidden system files on it that you can't see. Rather than trying to copy individual files across, just use the "copy complete CD" option in your CD burning software and it should solve the problem without the need to create an image file.
  • I'm going to be a right pain now and just check with you that i wont be able to do that on my laptop with only one cd rom drive will I?

Sorry, i'm sure this is a really silly question :o

I have to confess a lack of knowledge here - I've never used the NTI product you refer to.

But I doubt it will be a problem. Roxio, Nero, Gnomebaker and all of the other recent CD burners I've used simply save the content of the source CD in a temporary file on the hard disk and then prompt you to replace it with the target CD before burning the copy.

And I still say you can burn both CDs and DVDs on that drive, at least we know where you are hiding when not at work lol ;)
  • I thought you knew who I was on here anyway :D
