    The answer is yes!

Best to update photo anyhow as it is probably looking a bit dated! Whether you apply for first time, renew, or replace you need two passport photos.

In the small print it says that the picture must have been taken within a month of applying. Also worth noting that you can't have any hint of a smile, I had to get more new ones taken when I turned up at the passport office to get my passport processed because you could see my teeth in the photo!

Don't you have a dodgy haircut/shirt on in the old ones! My hair looks green in mine, roll on 2014 when I get a new one !

My home made ones failed because the flash cast too much of a shadow behind me - they'd been fine for visas, so save the pain and go to a camera shop offering the polaroid service or a booth.

Luckily I was at the passport office, so went in the booth there.

If you've a decent camera then go for it at home, we've replaced two in the last six months, both photo's taken against a fridge door which gave the slightly off-white grey colour background they require (the fridge is white... honest). If you don't print your photo's off regularly then go to a booth or photo shop... there again i saw a guy pump £12 into a machine to get a decent photo of his son and failed miserably ....... in the end he walked away photo-less and penniless

They cannot tell if you paid for your prints and as long as they comply with their standard they are fine.
