I guess you could try and argue that 13 months isn't a reasonable time for a £200 peice of kit to last with the retailer, failing that if you contact Nintendo they are usually fairly good at arranging repairs etc (and if you have any VC games on the wii you would probably need to do it via nintendo anyway to keep them).
IIRC Nintendo tend to charge either a fixed repair cost, or something along the lines of the wholesale cost of the unit for a repair (and will basically swap it for a new one) - for example it is/was about £45 for an out of warranty/user damage repair for a DS (technically they said they would just replace it upon receipt of the damaged one)0 -
I'd try Nintendo, they have a good reputation for Customer Service. I'm sure there was a thread on here recently where someone broke a Wii Remote using a thrid party charger and Nintendo still replaced the Wii remote. It's my problem, it's my problem

Recently our portable dvd player overheated and packed up two months past the warranty. I sent off an e-mail to daewoo, explained it had just past the warranty and it had been well looked after. They asked me to send it to them for inspection, two weeks later a newer version arrived free of charge.Goodwill.It's worth a try.0

update...i have just phoned nintendo and they said they will send me a prepaid returns label and that should be with me next week, and the repair takes 10 to 14 working days and they will let me know if they are going to charge me or not, they will phone and ask before they fix it.0

Can't ask for better than that.
Good to hear.0 -

The same thing has happened to my friend's wii after only 7 months. Lots of read errors meaning games either won't load or are unplayable if they do.0

has your friend contacted nintendo? better to get it sorted before the warranty runs out...mine has slowly got worse...i have looked on the web and it seems a common problem with the wii.0
