Wireless question

I have recently hooked up a wireless router to my laptop which has wi-fi. I have recently security protected it with WPA and administrator password. That is fine - however whenever I turn my computer on - I am automatically connected to the net (if the modem is on). This isn't a problem but I am wondering why this has happened now that I security protected the laptop. Just a bit concerned that I don't have to enter my password and if others can still access my connection. Can anyone explain this to me? Thanks

if you have told your laptop to connect when in range of your router, it is normal, just make sure you are connected to yours, and not someone elses, and make sure the router is really set to wpa by going into the config pages.
Ever get the feeling you are wasting your time?
  • Thanks albertross. It is definitely connected to my router - have re-named this as well. Also checked out the config page and it says WPA protected. I can't remember telling computer to connect auto but maybe I did without knowing! Thanks

That's what most users would like it to do! It sounds like you have set it up correctly but if you don't want it to connect, disable or switch off the wireless on your laptop.

Or, switch off the router till you want it on. Whatever is handiest.

No one should be able to get into your network because you have a password enabled, so when someone tries to connect to yours it will say security enabled network and they will have to enter the password.
