Outlook Express 6 problems

From this afternoon when trying to access emails OE6 keeps crashing and it is difficult to read emails. Have managed to read some then system crashes and I have to close OE6 down. I don't know whether it is one particular email which is stuck and I am unable to delete it. Have tried to read from GMail but the email isn't showing there and am unable to make it appear in order to clear OE6.

I did some Windows updates a day or so ago and unsure whether it is something to do with that or just a coincidence.

I seem to be able to read Hotmail and Lycos emails in OE6, it just seems to be one or two GMail emails causing the crash. They aren't malicious spam but from senders I recognise. Am wondering whether they contain lots of advertising, causing the crashes.

Am running Windows XP, would be grateful if anyone could advise what I can do to get rid of this couple of emails or get the system back on track.
Unfortunately I can't do a restore as yesterday I defragged system, did scan disc and deleted all restore points apart from latest.

Thanks for any help

    Hi

not a solution I'm afraid, but I get problems with running hotmail through outlook express - similarly to you, it sticks on some emails and just won't open them, even if they're from people in my address book.

More annoying than this, is tho, that there are two sets of each folder "Hotmail" and "Personal Folders" with everything duplicated - inbox, deleted items, sent items etc. The problem I find is even if I'm in Hotmail, sometimes when I send an email it only appears in the sent items of personal folders and not in my hotmail sent items.

Consequently I have discovered that these emails never actually arrive. I can't seem to find rhyme nor reason as to which ones. Some appear in both and seem to get sent ok

    Help please!!!

Thanks for your reply. It was three emails in my GMail Outlook Express folder which were sticking. I searched 'My Computer' for these and deleted from there, which seems to have sorted the problem.

I also have Hotmail set up in OE but haven't had any problems. There only seems to be one of each folder and it seems to run alright. What I would suggest is that you delete the Hotmail account in OE and re-configure. That might make it work alright for you.

    Good luck

Thanks. I've been googling to try and find an answer and the consensus seems to be that Microsoft don't want people to use OE without a fee paying email account, so are trying their best to block things - so we may get more problems.

When I look at my folders, there are 3 main ones - the first one is "Archive" fine, it's empty, the 2nd one is Hotmail, which has all my customised folders in and sent items and the 3rd one is called "Outlook Today (personal folders)" this has all the standard folders, inbox, drafts, outbox etc., etc. There is nothing in inbox because I use the inbox one in the Hotmail folder, but all my sent items appear in the sent items one in OT (pers folders), but only some of these appear in my sent items in the Hotmail folder and these are the only ones that seem to have sent properly.

It just seems to hit and miss that I can't decipher what I'm doing differently or why it's happening. I always select "new" when I'm clicked on the Hotmail folder and it happens regardless of whether someone is in my add. book or not.

Bit nervous of deleting it in case I can't reinstall - not very techy! I just hate sending attachments from the actual MSN Hotmail pages as they're so slow to load, compared to OE.

I have three email accounts set up in OE, they are GMail, Hotmail, and Lycos. Each have their own set of folders. For Hotmail my folders are Inbox, Sent Items, Deleted Items, Bulk Mail, Emails, then a couple of other folders which I added myself. Just wondering whether you have other emails as well as Hotmail set up in OE, whether you are experiencing similar problems with those along with Hotmail.

In OE, ie you go to Tools, Options, Send tab, there are various options which are ticked by default. Is 'Send messages immediately' ticked in your set up? It might be worth having a look at 'Options' and check whether everything seems OK.

You could also check your settings at Hotmail website. Log in there and go to Options, 'Manage my account', and check the settings to see whether they seem OK.

I hope you manage to get it sorted.

    Good luck

Thanks for that. I've just checked & the option to "send immediately when connected is ticked"

I wonder if it's because I've updated my hotmail to the windows live hotmail & it's all part of them trying to stop you using OE for free.

Everything works fine if I do it from the actual Hotmail web page - it's just so slow to attach and not as user friendly as OE.

Might have to do as you say and remove it and try again.

So you don't have a folder that is called "Outlook Today (personal folders)" in your OE?

Have just removed my hotmail account, but "Outlook Today (personal folders)" is still there - and can't delete it:confused: That's the one I want to get rid of, really!

It does say something about synchronising mailbox folders when I set up the Hotmail account in OE - I wonder whether this is synchronising with Outlook Today?

    Hi Josie

Is it Outlook or Outlook Express that you're using? I'm using Outlook Express and have only the folders in OE which i listed above, along with two others which I added myself. I am also using Hotmail Windows Live.

If using OE I would go to Tools, Accounts, Mail, Add, and type in your Hotmail details. This should add the new Hotmail account when you have deleted original one. I'm not certain whether Outlook works exactly the same way. If you're unsure about any of configuration details I can tell you how I have mine set up.

Possibly others MSE users can also advise further.

    Good luck

Oops! Yes, told you I wasn't very techie - it is just oulook, so perhaps that's why.

Mind you, have just tried sending one from my outlook today folder and it's worked - so that's a first, maybe removing it and adding it back on has worked after all.

Thanks for all your help :A
