Have to say as the administrator involved in putting all these requirements in to place I have to say that not all universities are the same.

I've spent days organising rooms (some with extra time, some with extra time and a computer, computer only, some of those private, some of those in rooms of less than 10), invigilators/scribes/readers, paper requirements (green, blue, large font) and then having to inform each student of their requirement. The office staff run about about 4 times a day delivering and collecting the papers. For heading towards 50 students taking up to 4 courses each (once had an exam of 8 people and 5 rooms were needed!). And that's just exam time, there's all the term time stuff as well.

Have you tried talking to the admin staff in the office? If not, then go to the Student's Association and see what they can do. I have no idea how they can get away with it, it's the law.

And Phil, as for not having enough rooms - that's rubbish (as usual), all the teaching rooms are empty at exam time!!

hard work then sammz i think if you find you need something as a student you have to ask and see what is available and what compromises can be made otherwise how do people like sammz know what you want

Yes, unfortunatly the disability advisor is totally clueless when it comes to mental health. This is so not helpful. I have since emailed the year tutor and informed him of my ill health and have stated that my partner will be dealing with all correspondance until I'm able to deal with it myself.

I will do what you have advised dmg24, sounds like a very viable option.

I know its a rather personal question and please exept my sincerest apologies if it ofends you.
Have you had a full assesment of your mental health? It also will be a good idea to see a SU listener have you a coucelling service there?

A lot of Disability offices have not got a clue how to deal with mental illness nor departments. I compleatly understand your situation Devil if you want to PM me for advice and such without putting it on a open forum dont hesitate to contact me.

Unfortunatley its a case if you cant see the disability many departments will dismiss it , I got harrased by one lecture over it too. Ask your disability officer to ask the department to go on training as a matter of the utmost urgency as others will benifit. Dont also be affraid to stamp your foot down its the University's resposibility to care for you achedemically if they are failng to help you go to the Student Union and tell them of your concerns.
A useful thing is to ask to speak to a senior member of department go in with your parner and SU representive and ask to get a guidance plan in place where time scales can be tweeked for work , support given and also more departmental support in the guise of weekly or fornightly meetings. The nack of solving a problem like this is to keep communicating transparantly and make sure you know the legal aspect of this I had to use it to stun the department into action.

Keep at it and dont take no for an answer
    good luck

Hi, You may find this link useful:

    http://www.equalityhumanrights.com/en/yourrights/rightsindifferentsettings/learningandtraining/Pages/Supportfordisabledstudents.aspx

Also, if you apply for your University's Access to Learning Fund, students with disabilities are usually prioritised, so this may be worth bearing in mind if you are in financial difficulty during your course.

Good luck, and let us know how you get on.
  • Back at uni tomorrow, so we'll see what happens when I hand an assignment in late. Still waiting for a reply to my many emails requesting extensions and support.

I don't know if this is appropriate for your circumstances but, at work, I find that when I really want someone to take notice (and action) on an email I am sending, I cc it openly to someone higher up the chain of command, (preferably someone who will give the 'underling' a rocket if they don't do as requested in a reasonable time). The fact that the 'underling' (lecturer) knows that his/her superior (or possibly disability advisor in your case) knows you have sent the email and what you have requested is a great motivator for the person receiving it as they are doubly aware they may have to justify what they have/have not done! :D
    Good luck

  • I've had to put a self cert in due to being absent last week and requiring extensions. Putting self certs in means I have to see the senior tutor; so I will express my concerns to her. Hopefully it'll do some good.
