Jobs and Bankruptcy

I used to be a mortgage advisor a couple of years ago before becoming self employed.. i'm pretty sure I can't do that anymore as it's regulated by the FSA.

I just don't know what to do, i'm applying for jobs at agencies and they are looking around for me but I feel embarrased that I am having to move away from what I know because I had a personal debt issue..

Seems really stupid.. I mean, I am in a much better position now to advise people that I was before all the bankruptcy etc..

Anyone else had to have a career change?

  • Yes, you would be a good person to come to for advice.
I've heard of people on here who work, not only for a CC company, but for their biggest creditor and have managed to keep their jobs. It seems to be a bit hit and miss.
The first time we said hello, was the first time we said goodbye. As the angels took your tiny hand and flew you to the sky-you forever left us breathless. RIP my beautiful granddaughter :(
  • I've been very lucky; I declared all to my boss who was actually really sympathetic. I work for a bank (who was one of my creditors too) & have managed to keep my job as it's not customer account based (ie: I have no access to account/mortgage balances) - the irony is that I'm less of a risk now than I was before the bankruptcy as I have no debts to repay!! :rotfl:
  • G-G - have you thought about applying to work for somewhere that does debt advice? From what I can gather, that is what Debt Doctor did. Used their experiences to help others. Have a look on websites like CAB, CCCS & Shelter and see what is available in your area.

Well, good news, I have a job interview with Norwich Union as an Insurance claims advisor, and i'm pretty sure it's not a call centre, which is a bonus.. I put in my C.V that I was bankrupt and she rang up earlier and said she had checked it all out and there were happy to give me an interview as I had been upfront and honest about it.

Woo - Looking forward to getting back on track, seems a decent job..

As for debt advice.. as much as it would be great to help others I just want to forget about debt and bankruptcy as quick as possible.. Might be worth doing it as a volunteer one day if i'm at a loose end or something, good idea though, thank you..

I work in a bank too, customer facing and money handling, full access to customer's accounts. My company was my major creditor. When I told them about the bankruptcy the manager had to refer it HR but the response a few days later was, it's not a problem at all. Maybe tellingly, I work for one of the only banks to offer accounts to bankrupts.

yup! This is exactly why I thought that being a mortgage advisor now was better than before. I have a much better idea of affordability and with no debts I have no interest whatsoever in stealing money! Not that being a bankrupt means you are a criminal.. well, unless you try and get a job that is regulated of course  then you are deemed a money grabbing, fraud risk it seems.. i'm not bitter.. :rotfl:

    Thanks!

It's on Thursday at 12noon. I am fairly confident as I always am.. haha - shouldn't be a problem getting the job..

My problem is me.. I just hope I like the job, do you know what I mean, nothing worse than going for an interview and it's not what you expected..

I really don't want to work in a call centre again, but I guess after being self employed for over 2 yrs then anything is gonna seem wierd..

I don't like the idea that people think bankrupts are criminals. I had a fairly small insurance claim for a house fire a couple of years ago and they asked if anyone in the family was bankrupt, I said no because at that time I had no idea I was heading in that direction. I thought it odd that they asked that question and wondered what it had to do with anything. Now that I'm going to be bankrupt soon I wonder if it will make any difference to my house insurance - well if it hadn't lapsed!

  • Good luck with the interview. We're rooting for you xxx
