My ex boyfriends (thank god) sister used to save up all the money she had picked up all year and treat herself to something nice with it. One year she got 13p :rotfl:
My new boyfriend found a £10 note on the ground in London a couple of weeks ago.2008 Comping ChallengeWon so far - £3010 Needed - £230Debt free since Oct 20040 -
dd has learned that any money she finds on the floor in the house is hers. sometimes i 'accidentally' drop pennies in odd places to encourage her to clean... she's quickly learned that cleaning often leads to money for her piggy

I bought a coat from Ebay recently and put it on and felt a piece of paper in the pocket. I pulled out the paper, expecting it to be a shopping list or something and found a banknote. On examination it turned out to be a banknote from Budapest to the value of 200 units of budapest currency (sorry I don't know what that is
). Feeling all excited, I asked OH to look it up on the internet. It turns out to be worth about 50p. I still have it in my purse and I'll put it in the Charity 'holiday money' jar in Thomas Cook when I am passing.
Once I picked up a woolly hat from a hedge. It had been dropped in a puddle and was wet. I took it home and washed it and it is now my running hat. I feel slightly ashamed at picking up a discarded garment from a hedge. Has anyone else done this? Come on people, make me feel a bit better about this!Sealed Pot Challenge #8 £341.90

i've picked up many a discarded item of clothing, taken it home washed it and either worn it myself, given it away or sold it on ebay
i normally wait til i see it's been out there for a few days and no one is going to claim it
when we lived in glasgow i swear i could have clothed half the homeless population with the clothes i found
i once found a load of stuff on top of a builder skip. some things were toys so i came back at night with dh and we took a few things. then we saw loads of clothes which really offended me! clothing should go to charity shops even if it is ruined because they can get money from the rag man (who then turns the clothes into other products), clothing shouldn't go to landfill sites!
anyway we took two rubbish bags full of clothing home couldn't believe it when i pulled out a VERSACE jumper! i washed it up and sold it on to a friend of mine for a fiver! given the neighbourhood it came from i'm certain it was the real deal too! we also found loads of kids clothes so daughter wore some of them and some of the items are in her dressing up box to this day. everything else went to charity shopsfounder of Frugal Genius UK (Yahoo Groups)0 -
Finding stuff in skips can be really lucrative. I found a computer printer lying in a skip, took it home and it works perfectly. My brother-in-law - the upper middle-class one - is absolutely shameless. He has done up his kitchen largely using timber he has picked out of skips. We were right in the centre of Glasgow once, in the middle of busy shopping street, and he started helping himself to the timber with everyone watching. We also found a computer keyboard in there, which worked, and I sold it.

skip diving midgie raking dumpster diving
yep been there done that and have benefited very much from doing so!
it's ridiculous what gets thrown away, absolutely shameful!
we practice an earth based spirituality so it's doubly important to us to recycle and reuse. to me not doing so is as bad as a devout christian not going to church or tithing etc or a catholic not going to confession...
i actually cry sometimes when i think what we're doing to this earth... it's so hard to live in this society and not contribute to the problem but at least i can help make amends by salvaging useful items
many a time i've found something that was still useful but not to me...down to the charity shop it went or to friends or family. now that i'm with freecycle that would be my first port of call
we all really need to take stock of what we're doing to the world we're handing over to our children and grandchildrenfounder of Frugal Genius UK (Yahoo Groups)0 -
I luuuuuurrrrve finding money and things I can use I think my best finds are a 5ft fishtank, in someones garden, I knocked on the door and asked if they were selling it the lady said no you can have it :j couldn't believe my ears it replaced my old one for a while, before I decided it was too big and sold it for £75.
my next best find was when I lost my birth certificate, thought it might have fallen down underneath one of the kitcken units(thought it was in the drawer) pulled the base board off to find 2 £10 notes plus a load of papers  I had only been here 2 months so It wasn't mine.
the last I was at womad music festival looked by my feet to find £15 asked the stall holder if she had dropped she said no and i could have it :T
