Hi
I was wondering if anyone know the cheapest place I can get bark or slate from?
I have phoned the council but they don't chop and chip their trees now they hire in a contractor, use any bark he has created but if they need more they have to buy it
I bought two bags from B&Q yest but it is £5.25 a bag, which is ok as I only needed two bags for the front garden, but for my back garden project I need a lot more than that.
Any ideas welcomed (free would be best)

Unless someone like you cares a whole awful lot,

Might be worth trying Ebay - some people are advertising bark and slat chippings by the large load, although mostly for pick-up only. Are a few that will deliver though.
The other option is places that advertise selling aggregates and building materials etc. - you may find something there.0 -
... Or Freecycle, as I have seen loads of chipped bark on our local Freecycle site before now, after some people have chopped trees down.0

Thanks, I have been looking out on freecycle, I will continue to do so....
My mum just phoned she needs some too so we will phone around and see if we can get a load cheaply

See if you have a fencing manufacturer in your area. We have one here and they sell the stripped bark by the cubic metre.0

If you want proper bark for "appearance", we found the cheapest way to buy was from Homebase when it is on three bags for £whatever (£10 or £12 I think). We priced up bulk bags from various sources and found these were way more expensive - at least in our area.
If you go for the tree shredding type - check its "clean". If its from a garden clearance it may have all sorts of nasties in it, e.g. briars, elder, bindweed. Also, if there is a lot of conifer in it it will affect the soil pH.0 -
I got mine from B&Q the last time they did one of those 'when its gone, its gone' days - 6 big bags for £12. Still have 3 bags to use, but where I have used it out the front, someones cat thinks its a nice toilet whilst I'm out at work!!!!C Card £5218.68 (Feb 2011)£2 coins (No 085) - £190Mort overpayments 2011 - £418.060

Hi
Ring the nearest tree surgeon or gardener in the phone book. Ours delivers a a wagon load at intervals to the allotment site, free of charge. Quite good enough for paths or mulchIf you've have not made a mistake, you've made nothing0
