DLA and carers' allowance

Currently I get DLA at mid-rate care and low-rate mobility and my husband gets carers' allowance.

However, my husband has become extremely ill (liver failure) and we have been advised to apply for DLA for him.

Does this mean his carers' has to stop?

Also, even though I'm on DLA, can I claim carers' as I am looking after him despite my disability?

Many thanks,
Ana

no his carers will not stop and yes if he gets DLA care middle or above you can claim carers too.

i dont think his carer's would be stopped, but i could be wrong.
both my sons get dla and i get carer's couple months ago i claimed dla for myself, which i was awarded and i still get my carer's as even tho i have my own disabilities, i still struggle but do care for my sons too

Yes you can claim Carers Allowance (CA) even if you're awarded DLA. Sounds a bit mad really but it's right.

If you both got a qualifying benefit (middle or high rate DLA) you need to be very careful about claiming and being paid CA as it would mean you'd lose out on two severe disability premiums in means tested benefits which is almost £100 pw.

It's a bit complex but if you were both on IB then you should claim CA as you wouldn't actually be paid it but would have underlying entitlement. You'd therefore still get the two severe disability premiums as well as the carers premiums.

If your husband does get it awarded you need to seek advice immediately so you don't lose money. Come back on the site and let us know
I'll get you, my pretty, and your little dog too!
  • Many, many thanks for the replies.

I've applied for his DLA today and will get some advice about this.
