  • Reinstall your software first and see if that works? If it still plays silly beggers? then it maybe a hardware fault like hard drive memory.

Unfortunately, there can be SO many reasons for a PC freezing.

I had exactly the same problem recently, with it freezing after a random amount of time, ranging from 1 minute to many hours, but once froze it would require a hard-boot.

There are loads of possible hardware faults, many of them discussed above - bad connections, failing memory, over-heating (a previous PC would freeze when it got to hot), hard disk fault etc..etc..

PLUS....there are lots of possible software faults, including spyware, adware etc. etc...

    So.....how to deal with it?
Well, knowing that there were LOTS of possible causes, I put up with the problem for a few weeks. I knew that when the PC froze it would take a couple of minutes to re-boot - and if it happened a few times a day I would lose 10-15 minutes per day (and hopefully no data!). The alternative was to find the REAL problem, but I knew that was going to take hours if not days.....

I suggest...try the obvious hardware faults. Check cables, try working memory (or tests current memory) etc. etc.. Heat, although a cause, can usually be identified because it would only likely cause freezing after your PC has been on for a while - in MY case, the PC could be freeze immediately it was first switched on ie. when cold! Hence, unlikely to be the heat.

Assuming (or hoping!) that it's not a hardware fault, the next step is to consider software. But....my tip here is not to try and find the offending software! Backup your data, and do a full re-install. I know, I know...it's a pain and can take several hours to get Windows re-installed and your key applications installed. But.....it can take a LOT longer to find an offending bit of software.

Anyway....that's what I did......re-installed, and several hours later, I had a PC that didn't freeze any more! Plus, I had a lot cleaner PC, because I didn't re-install half of the programs I had on my PC before that.

    Good luck!

    Cheers,
    Don
