I tried to work this out too. Charges are high for something you get for free from your bank. Are they aimed at people that cant get a bank account?Debt Now~Total-£14,366.72~CC-£1,600.00~Sofa-£1,349.01~Loan-£11,417.71

but am i not right in saying that the goverment say that everyone should be able to get access to a bank account???happy to be debt free (apart from mortgage: £111,000 @ sept 15)0 -
The problem is - and I'm speaking from experience - that it is unbelievably difficult to get a basic bank account with a Visa or Mastercard facility on it. Try booking a flight online or ordering something from an American website with a Solo card...0

We use one for our online Tesco shop as they dont take Electron - also for my husbands work expenses when he goes abroad
The govt may say everyone can get a bank account but it is not that easy.

Not all banks give a debit card with a basic account. Nationwide, Abbey, NatWest, Barclays - don't
TSB, Yorkshire, Halifax,THINK BANKING - do. Some visa electron, some maestro
Pre-paid
not all places take maestro0 -
Not everyone can get a debit card - unfortunately many basic bank accounts only come with a simple cash card allowing you only to access your money via a cashpoint - some banks even stating that you can only use their own cashpoints!!
For some people budgeting is easier by using a card for shopping, etc so that this is an ideal option for those who cannot get a debit card.:money:Proud to be dealing with my debts :money:IA's lose the belly & bum 0/28lbs in 08Live on 4k #107 - £106.45/£4k£20k by Xmas £781.90/£20kOlympic #74 Bronze - £120.06/£1008Lunch Log #50 - £7.90GC 2008Jan £200/£54.59"Whoever said money can't buy happiness simply didn't know where to go shopping.":rotfl: :rotfl: :rotfl:0 -
As I mentioned in the OP this was originally posted in the Bankrupt forum but I though people could also benefit from seeing the list here.
They may seem pointless to those able to get credit but many of us on an even tighter budget have difficulty obtaining/retaining an account that freely gives you a debit card too. Also consider that some people may have only a Maestro/Electron card (eg. my Egg account only utilises a PLUS card usable for free at most ATM's bot not in stores) and would like an alternative purchasing option for where their card isn't accepted.
It's the ONLY option for me to enable payment of my internet fees with BE as they only accept credit/debit cards. Many other companies allow payment of bills at places like PayPoint but like my example there are exceptions.“We are not interested in the fact that the brain has the consistency of cold porridge.” - Alan Turing.0 -

NatWest do issue a debit card with a basic account (Step account) i have a Step account and was issued with a Solo card which does work online with most UK retailers. One day you are the bird and the next you are the statue, but everyday you should try to do something you love0 -
