And just as with chicken there ARE salmon fisheries which are organic and have sustainable ethics and fish welfare in mind. ;)LINK

Thanks HB, I'll certainly look into it but I'm guessing it will be a similar scenario as the chicken in that it's more expensive to buy thus we will need to curtail the frequency with which we eat salmon :(

We'll be left with nothing to eat at this rate!!! :rotfl:

I had also read another post which I was itching to reply to, and I guess "killing people to reduce the population" was still in the front of my mind.

Yes!!!!! Kill all the people that plunder this earth and don't give a damn about living sustainable lives ;)

The rest of us can live in harmony then :D

  • I actually think my figures on irrigated arable land are on the low side. I only quickly looked it up, it's not something I've researched in depth.

The link I gave, Food and Soil, lists "Irrigated Agricultural Land" as 276,719,000 hectares (the figure I originally gave), and states that this figure is 20% of all arable land. I had assumed that the other 80% of arable land was used for grazing animals (and unsuitable for growing crops), but the same chart defines arable land as "cropland, or land cultivated with crops". So it would appear that there is in fact five times the amount of land for growing crops available per person than I originally thought.

Though I'd have to say it's not being very well utilised.
I want to move to theory. Everything works in theory.

I occasionally buy my cats wild salmon as a treat :)

Sounds like we'd all have to give up work and go work on the land to feed our selves. Sounds nice but who's going to make all the other stuff we need?

Isn't that how we used to do it? I was only saying to my OH the other night that I'd love to turn back the clock and live a much simpler life, but neither of us could actually think of an era that there weren't consequences to pay for one reason or another.

Landowners and peasants springs to mind, plus disease and deprivation, not to mention plundering and killing. Just how far back would we need to go to live in a decent society that was fair and just? If it ever did exist

I do not have endless hours to research this, there could be figures for irrigated arable land in 2007 out there somewhere.

Please show me where you got the information that "we've built on a lot" of irrigated arable land in the last five years. In this country at least, irrigated arable land (i.e. land for growing crops) is well protected against development.

It's obvious that population growth has to drastically slow down. Not sure how that is going to happen. A debate for another time let's say.

The way global warming is going, much of the irrigated arable land in this country (thinking East Anglia fenlands here) is going to end up back under the sea before the end of this century, so what on earth are people going to do then???? :rotfl:

My ex used to think that, she was always saying I wish I lived back then. I used to say "It's a romance novel you're reading, it wasn't really that nice in victorian times"

However, back in the days when we used to grow our own food there were far fewer people. All they did was grow their own food and little else, these days we need to provide food for the people who work in the power stations, hospitals, factories etc. If we went back to all having our own patch of land and having to grow our own food we would have to give up everything else.

Might not be a bad idea actually, half the people in the world only want stuff because others have it, if we all had nothing...........

Fair enough, but unless we do something about the population we still have the problem of needing more and more land to "live" on and having less and less land to "grow crops" on. One day the balance will tip the other way and there won't be enough land.

There's only one thing for it, we'll have to kill all those people who are wasting land by giving chickens more than they need. ;)
  • I'm currently looking at veal as an option but it seems to be quite expensive so would have to be a rare treat rather than a staple food unfortunately :(

I have purchased the braising veal from well hung meat and found it good value. http://www.wellhungmeat.com/desc.php?product_id=248 I sometimes order through natoora if there are good vouchers about (+quidco of course), though they con't have it in stock at Natoora at the mo. http://www.natoora.co.uk/uk/Boutique.asp

My DSs are not keen on beef but love the texture of veal.

I have alos had the osso bucco, but that is a bit of an expensive treat.

I think if every family limited themselves (voluntarily) to one child, it would be a great thing for this planet. It would take a massive shift in personal and society attitudes for that to happen, though.

But if they did that they wouldn't be entitled to claim such huge welfare benefits that enables them to live the life of riley whilst leaching from the rest of society!!!! <ducks for cover> :D
