    Mortgage-free Glee!
    Martin & Co,

In the "show after the show", the gentleman on the programme mentioned his mortgage and the fact that his life assurance was sold as "you have to buy through us - or the deal isn't available".

My husband had the exact same thing - a fairly recent (ie 6 years ago to a first time buyer) HSBC mortgage, yet he was told he had to take the banks product or wouldn't be offered the same deal. My husband wasn't aware that the law had changed, and obviously the bank didn't tell them otherwise.

After meeting my hubby, I reviewed his outgoings (!) and I discovered he was paying nearly £35 per month for a decreasing term policy on a £120k mortgage for a 35 year old, healthy male!

I was paying £8 per month for the same mortgage amount and I am three years older! Having reviewed the Ts and Cs, the policy appears identical.

He has since switched to another provider for a similar amount.

When we challenged the bank about the mis-selling, they provided a really fluffy worded letter about the fact that they couldn't track the original transaction info, so couldn't prove we were mis-sold, etc.

I think it is worth getting people to check this again - we know its been covered before - because its still not getting through to the consumer.

    Thanks Martin!

Well she spends all her time on the Bank Charges Forum helping other people claim theirs, and you know how it is: lots of people don't follow their own advice, LOL.
