Will hubby need new passport for UK to US travel

Hi there,

My son and I have passports which are only a year or two old that include the new data pages with chip.
My husbands does not.
Please could anyone advise us if he will need to renew his passport to the same type as ours to enter the US. It was 2004 when we went last time but security has changed so much since then we aren't sure.

Thanks very much !

  • If your husbands passport is still in date and not expired, then it is still a valid travel document and will be accepted by the US.

    Enjoy your trip.

It's still possible (though unlikely) for a UK passport not to be machine readable. If that's the case then hubby will need a new passport or a visa

Have a look at the BA advice as it contains the relevant information

It doesn't need to have a chip, it just needs to be machine readable. If on the photo page it's got 2 lines of text starting with something like P<UK<YOURNAME<<< then it's fine. It's almost certainly machine readable, unless it was issued at a British embassy outside of the UK.
  • As long as it is in date it will be fine. My passport is over 8 years old and worked fine when we went!

Mine is nearly 10 years old and I used it twice to enter the USA last year. Nothing to worry about.
Thanks for the post as it has just reminded me to pick up a new passport form when I'm at the PO today :)

No need to get a form from the PO. Go to the Passport Office website and you can complete the form on there. They then send it to you to sign and return with your fee and photos and voila! Passport back in no time.
