Hi all,

I have a new laptop and it seem to work fine but eve so often it will turn it self off any idaer why this may be? or is there a error log I can see that may help. I thought it was overheating as the fan was blocked but been using it on table and it still does it.

if it is new I would be tempted to take it back. it is likely to be an overheating prob and since the fan was blocked for some time the damage may already be done

  • Hiya - funny you should mention this.... I've just had the same problem with my Toshiba Satellite A30 laptop...it started off with switching itself off after half an hour and then it became more frequent until a few days ago, it switched off after just 10 mins!! :(

So, i googled laptop problems and came across overheating and it seems like this happens quite frequently especially with Toshiba ones. After some reading up, i decided to save myself some cash and have a go at fixing it myself since it looked quite simple to fix (not a techie at all but asked our IT at work and they believed it was the same thing). Unfortunately, my laptop is 6 years old and out of warranty....

To fix it, i followed this advice:

    http://www.laptoprepair101.com/laptop/2006/01/04/toshiba-laptop-overheating/

The CPU component is easy to find just under a couple of screws on the back of the laptop (suare/rectangle copper coloured part). I took this out, bought some stuff from Maplins called Akasa CPU and Heatsink Cleaner 125ml bottle £6.99 and Akasa Silver Thermal Compound tube £7.99. You'll notice that there'll be some white gluey type stuff on the CPU and square contact point - just wipe it off with the cleaner and a tissue and vac out the dust. Then apply some new compound to the contact and then put the CPU back in. Mine seems to be running perfectly now (and it sounds a lot quiter too :j)

    Hopefully this helps :)
