Surely you are joking re the Post Office?! £312 gets you only $581. (rate 1.836)

Best rate is with Travelex £312 gets you your required $600 (rate 1.9181)

M+S slight lower rate, £318 will give you $600 (rate 1.884)

The Post Office seem to have put their currency charges up recently.

When standing in the queue, I often look at the foreign exchange prices on the screen and there always used to be around 12% difference between their buying price and their selling price, roughly equating to a 6% loading on any currency you were buying.

Last time, I noticed it was around 14%, equating roughly to a 7% loading.

The Selling Rate for USD notes against GBP is usually about 550 to 600 points lower than the interbank 'Cable' rate

Anything better than 1.90 would be a good rate at the current level

If you're buying this currency in order to spend, consider getting a Nationwide Flexaccount or a credit card from either the Post Office or Nationwide. All of these cards allow you to spend in foreign currency without loading or commission, and are therefore the best by far for spending in dollars. I beliueve the debit card also allows you to take money out at foreign cash machines using the same conversion method, but you'd need to double check that.
