Barclaycard - trying to find new card

I have a problem which I do not seem able to resolve.

I have banked with Barclays for 29 years and have a Barclaycard through them with a limit of roughly GBP 8,000. My current balance is a couple of hundred pounds above my limit. This is my only credit card.

Over the last few years I have had occasional difficulties meeting the minimum payments and this has caused a degree of tension at times.

However, I recently changed job (October 1) and work with an international bank in their trust department. An improved salary will now ensure that I will be able to meet regular payments. I cannot open a bank account with this bank as the only offer savings accounts and I do not want to ask them for a staff loan as I am still in my trial period.

I was thinking of challenging Barclaycard about charges etc as suggested on GMTV as well as transferring my balance to another card. However, before approaching Barclaycard I thought it would be best to have another card lined up. I thought of Virgin and submitted a request to them. I subsequently spoke to them but was told that I was turned down as my Barclaycard is considered in default. I was not aware of this. I have still been receiving regular statements.

Having had a look at the suggested sites, I see that Mint might be a possibility if I can reduce the balance to be transferred to GBP 7,500. However, I am concerned that if I apply with them and am turned down then this will make it harder to have an application accepted by someone else. I really don't need a credit limit of GBP 7,500 but want to reduce my balance without having to pay such a high APR to Barclaycard. An eventual limit of GBP 2 – 3,000 would be suitable.

Can anyone suggest what might be the best course of action?

Many thanks

Your going about this the wrong way:

Your missing payments and now your overlimit by a fair amount and your solution is to take them on for bank charges?

Also, your credit rating is probably tarnished and two bits of info on it will make lenders decline you new borrowing.

a: You will have a few missed payments on your Barclaycard account.
b: Barclaycard will report the account as over limit ie: Limit £8000 Balance £8500 and when you run an application they do take this into account.

Its very unlikely you will obtain further credit so you should pluck up the courage and ring Barclaycard, tell them your having trouble and also explain you have obtained a new job on far higher earnings. I think that when this is all over with and your in your new job you realy need to get over to the DFW board as you need to push the balance on this card down to avoid it being a problem in the future.

Please dont put your head in the sand and do daft things. By all means take Barclaycard on for your charges but at the moment you need to keep them sweet;)

GOOD LUCK WITH THE NEW JOB:D
