virgin media Freedom / PCGuard

My dad has nackered up his laptop......he expects me to sort it but I dont know whats wrong with it and suddenly its my fault....once again I utter the words ''dad, if you dont understand it, dont touch it''.......the story so far

They had Blueyonder PC Guard on their laptop but it was very slow and took ages to start up and slowed their laptop down and was pretty useless so I suggested all the other usual routes to try to see if we could speed up their laptop (storing all their excessive pics of the 1st new grandson on my seperat HDD, reinstalling PC, using windows firewall and AVG antivirus free ed, and spy bot S&D etc etc) we did this and the laptop did speed up a bit and all was working well. Then my dad got his hands on it! For some reason because the AVG shortcut was not on his desktop he decided to reinstall PC Guard  (jeez the only reason I took the shortcut of his desktop and just left it on mums was so he didnt mess with it and break it :p) but half way through he must have decided ''oh no I better not do this'' as it seems to only have half reinstalled. Its also now called FREEDOM! It has uninstalled the AVG AntiVirus (or he has however he will not cop to this so perhaps the Freedom uninstalls any other Anti Virus before installing, which he will have clicked yes to) but as its only part installed it wont load up and just throws up a ton of errors when you turn the PC On, saying its not working to its full ability, and it needs reinstalling to work properly etc and these errors constatly appear. I have tried uninstalling the programmed, the uninstall wizard starts to load then dissapears and nothing else happens and it doesnt uninstall, have tried reinstalling it & repairing it but again this will not work as an error appears saying ''Installation of Virgin Broadband advisor has failed because the existing version faild to uninstall'' so back to catch 22 as it wont uninstall!

Ive tried doing a system restore to an earlier date, this does not fix the problem - is the only way around it to do a complete restor of the PC and reload the OS and all the drivers back on, and start from fresh, I didnt really want to do this as I find it a right ball ache!!

Any ideas anyone :D

the time taken to reinstall may be shorter than messing around. It is a pain but then at least you know that it is correct when you give it back. but try unistalling both av progs. If these fail then delete files/folders in 'prog files' if any that relate to the av products are still in there. Run ccleaner which will hopefully sort out the registry. Then try and reinstall avg
If you can not delete files as they are 'in use' then disable them in system start up using spybot or config re boot and they should be uninstallable or deletable.

right well the files were in use, stoped everything through msconfig, all files would then delete except 2. I can not see where there being used in anyway but it will not delete them, the 2 files are ActDtcR.dll and ActDtxR.dll, the CCleaner didnt shift them either. Ive googled and seems they are some kind of Malware but I cant find anything on how to deete them - any ideas?

(mum would prefer if I didnt zap the laptop if possible cause she cant find the Office disc she has been looking for!)
