Seven Days in the US - Where to go?

OK chaps, assuming they don't decide to cancel them, I'm off to the US for a week at the end of April. I'm flying to and from JFK, but I don't intend to stay in NY for more than a day.
So can anyone suggest an itinerary for me? I'm happy to travel elsewhere by plane, train or bus!
Look forward to any suggestions ... x

Boston, Chicago.. if you fancy flying right across to the West you can't say fairer than San Franciso, maybe even a cheeky stop in to Vegas.0

They were the places I was thinking of too ...
Am annoyed that AmTrak don't do a 7 day pass, but the 14 day one will probably work out better value than lots of single journeys.
Just can't book anything until I am sure they are honouring the fares! xGone ... or have I?0 -
Got to be Niagara, but cross the border into Canada its much prettier there plus more going on. Then Boston and anywhere in between from Boston you can go to Salem for less than £5 return and Cape Cod similar prices all easy by train very easy too.:hello: Lets all save a £ or two, lets all earn a £ or two, and lets all enjoy spending that £ or two wisely.

what about trying to get the free megabus tickets that has been talked about on another thread. you could drive to cape cod with an overnight stop in mystic.we did this.0

unless you want to do a kind of Kerouac style trip where the journey is part of the holiday stay in New York State - plenty to see and do - why would you spend your week flying everywhere? Explore the whole region then maybe north to Boston /Cape Cod, New hampshire generally a great place - we've done all this and had good times0

It's in the opposite direction, but Washington DC is a great place for a short visit, good time of year to go too...not too hot and muggy like August. Unlike most US cities the major sights are pretty much all within walking distance, and there's an effiicient simple metro system. In addition to the White House, the Mall leading up to Capitol Hill contains some of the world's greatest museums and galleries and all the capital's famous monuments, memorials (Lincoln, Washington, Jefferson mounuments, Vietnam memorial etc.) Georgetown (off the metro) is also a funky, lively area to visit. Then across the river there's Old Town Alexandria and the very moving Arlington National Cemetery. When you've had enough of DC there's all of Maryland and Virginia with a beautiful coastline, wide open spaces, battlefields and great drives. You can go by train or plane from NY to DC. Just a thought.Just because somebody is certain doesn't mean they are right!0

the weather in the cape cod area can be rather hit and miss at that time of year (for that read bitter).
i'd fly if you are visiting the falls
i'd always recommend washington but you'll either love boston or not ...the choice is yours .0
