Off to Bratislava!

Hi PEeps,

We are off to Bratislava and have a hotel all booked up in the Old Town.

Has anyone got any recommendations of what to do whilst there?

Anyone been there etc? Places to eat and drink?

any help gratefully received!

bratislava is nothing like the film hostel. its not quite as western friendly or modern as say prague, some rail staff , small shops public services etc don't speak english well (not that i speak slovakian) but bars and restaurants are fine. there's a good selection of bars and restaurants in the old town . beer and food are very cheap. the old tow is very charming and pleasant and clean and the castle is well worth a visit. vienna is only 50 km away or about an hour on the train or there are river cruises there (about 4-5 hours) so its possible to visit there for a day.
I only went to bratislava for 3 days as part of a longer trek through eastern europe and really enjoyed the place but i don't think i would have wanted to stay longer.
the local currency is the slovak koruna, this is different from the czech koruna i think there is about 4000 to the pound . have a great time.

The exchange rate for Slovak Koruna is about 44.50 for a pound at the moment.

I can only recommend that you look on the tripadvisor website for places to drink and eat. I come from Slovakia, the eastern side and only been to Bratislava few times.

I would try to venture a bit out of the most popular bits (if you hvae the time) of Bratislava as he drinks and food will be cheaper there also you will see a bit more of the 'real' slovak culture.

Try to look up few simple words in slovakian like: ano = yes, nie = no, pivo = pivo, prosim = please ( it's pronanunced as it's written) Let me know if you need some more lol

Also if you are going in winter it will be quite cold there, possibly snow.

    Hope this hlps a little

One place i would recommend for drinks is the UFO bar on top of the one bridge. Its got a great atmosphere and excellent views although it's not exactly moneysaving!
  • Great work thanks guys and gals!

How much is food and drink normally?

    about £1 a pint or so? £2-£3 a meal?

    Whats the speciality dish?

been told about the UFO tower by the bridge and also the castle is nice to go to!

    Cheers keep em comin!

This is a very decent restaurant in Rusinov, about 5mins in a taxi from the Old Town.
It's a hunting restaurant and the food is locally sourced and fresh....gorgeous with a great chef. Well worth a visit if you have time.
