6 weeks around the world

Options
Hi,

I'm planning on taking a 6 week trip around the world, mainly Austrailia and New Zealand (with stops in Tokyo, LA and New York) in September and was going to buy and pre-book it all with a specialist firm but was wondering if there are any ways to save money on flights and accomadation?.
Has anyone done this sort of thing before or do you know of any sites that can give tips, i.e. I've been told that youth hostels in Sydney are quite nice so it's not worth spending money on hotels there.

many thanks,

Kevin.

For flights you could try https://www.travelbag.co.uk or https://www.qantas.co.uk (which have special offers on every so often) or try https://www.thegreatescapade.com which allocates you mileage to use to go around the world. I think the best way to go is via Asia and return via the USA. We are going to NZ for 3 weeks in October and booked our flights through Travelbag but are going to SanFrancisco and Hong Kong aswell, flying with BA and Qantas - (same sort of ticket as The Great Escapade). Have also joined the YHA here to get hostels in NZ but have booked one to start off with. I would go independently as most of the time you can get cheaper accomodation if you book yourself. When we spent 6 months in Oz about 7 years ago we camped which was great, but remember they are allways not in the city and if your going with a mate can be quite squashed, however it was a great way to see the country. Perhaps a campervan could be of use for a few weeks but they can be quite dear.
I would recommend Ayres Rock, Sydney and Cairns in OZ and try this link for NZ

Thanks for the reply, all useful information!. We fancy hiring a camper van for a week in NZ and will join YHA and use them in Austrailia.

    cheers,

    Kev.

Do you think that £6000 is enough for two of us for flights, accom and spends?.

We only took £7000 and it lasted us 6 months between 2 of us and i think we only got $2 to £1 and that was some years ago. That'll be plenty.

The main point I would pick up on is not to join YHA. This limits yourself to only 1 or 2 hostels in each place. There are other such cards that you can buy when you get there that have more hostels in the scheme and after staying in one YHA in NZ, I have to say I did not find it as good as some of the other hostels.

I cannot remember the name of the card- sorry.

I went on a round-the-world ticket about 2 years ago- London, Bangkok, Hong-Kong, Sydney, LA, New York, London - spent 5 weeks travelling.

Did most of the hotels, including the flights from Trailfinders. Was very happy with the service, they have knowledgeable staff. Have fun.
