Madeira is very easy to visit on your own.
The cable car ride is worth doing and the sled ride down is quite good fun.
This is very easy to do independently.
We went on a caramarin cruise (about 3 hours) for a whale watching trip.
It was very family oriented and was a fun trip rather than serious whale watching
i.e. we spend half the time whale watching and the other half swimming behind the boat.
But there were food and dinks on board and I really enjoyed it.
The boat we were on was called Freebird and I'm sure you can google for them if you want more info.
It wasn't near the cruise port so it was about an hours trip there and 1.5 hours back (with drop offs).
We did Lisbon independently.
We did a bus tour and we wasted an hour because we were waiting for the wrong bus. I'm sure it's quite possible to do independently but you can waste time (like we did) trying to get tickets, buses etc. It's a large city so either do a trip or make sure you know what you want to do.0 -

lisbon, in the large square, very central, there are some awsome photos and drawings on large stands, depicting unusual occurences from around the world0

gabyjane, can I ask who your cruise is through & how long it's for? My dad is looking for this exact cruise for his 60th birthday & I'm trying to help him out by finding one at the best price.0
