l would ask at customer service at the supermarket :p the more people that ask will make them realise they need to change :T

Most definitely! The supermarkets aren't going to know people want free range unless they actually TELL THEM!!!! No good walking past an empty shelf and not saying anything.

My cynical head wonders whether the supermarkets have removed free range birds from the shelves just to see whether the public would still by the cheap chicken if the choice was taken away from them ;)

Surely, knowing these films were due to be screened this week, you'd have thought any sensible supermarket manager would ahve stocked up on free range chickens in preparation

How can you say buying the expensive chicken worked out the same as buying the cheaper one simply because you gave your family less chicken! You can buy cheap chicken and give your family less!

Obviously I can't speak for the OP, but in my experience when using free range chicken I find the meat goes a lot further because it isn't pumped full of water and additives, therefore you don't need as much to feed a person ;)

I remember back in the days when I might have have bought a tray of cheap breasts :o or, god forbid, a bag of frozen breasts  to make say a curry, I would need to use at least 6 of those breasts to feed 4 people.

If I buy free range chicken breasts from my butcher I only need to use 2 to feed the same amount of people the same size portion :D

Whilst I think on, can I please remind people that to make a true and fair comparison of the price of whatever they're buying that they need to check how much it costs per kg (or lb) and not per item!

Example just now the poster gave prices for a pack of 4 chicken breasts compared to a pack of 2 free range breasts, but never mentioned the weight of each pack so we have no idea which was the better value in true terms.

Having tried both, there is not a person on this earth that will convince me that cheap chicken shrinks to half the size.

Assuming all breasts start out the same size, I just do not believe that the free range one will be twice as big as the cheap one after they are both cooked.

    Hence the need to
    cut up some spuds
and made wedges to bulk the meal out for the kids
    and
the other 2 l used for curry for me and other half
bulk the curry out with loads off veg had in fridge

I did this earlier, but got interested in a program about wreckers.

    Tesco

Free Range Whole Chicken 1.00-2.4kg £3.69/Kg
Tesco Fresh Whole Chicken Medium 1.40-1.99kg £2.28/Kg
Tesco Fresh Whole Chicken Large 2.00-3.50kg £2.18/Kg

So a 2Kg Free range chicken will cost £7.38 and "normal" 2Kg chicken will cost £4.36. A difference of £3.02.

The price of chickens seems to have gone up in Asda, I thought it was two for £5, now it seems to be 2 for £6! However, my local Asda this evening had NO chicken other than the 2 for £6 ones- and I mean no alternatives at all. So, if an average consumer is trying to buy free-range, or something close to that, how can they if their local supermarket is pushing the cheaper chickens? Of course the consumer can walk with their feet, but this particular Asda is in an area where the population are not particularly well off, and there are no local shops to go and buy an alternative.

it just felt to me, and I read this in a paper today, all the programmes regarding food were "trial by TV" and a backlash has kicked in from the supermarkets, together with all the media advertising from the supermarkets.

    You must be psychic :p:D

I was just pricing up chicken breasts at Tesco as I've done the whole chickens on a previous thread ;)

    Ok, here goes ...

    Tesco Value S/less C/B Fillets - £6.40 /kg
    Tesco Healthy Living S/less C/B - £10.58 /kg
    Willow Farm Skinless C/B - £11.49 /kg
    Tesco Free Range S/less C/B - £11.00 /kg
    Tesco Organic C/B S/less C/C - £15.49 /kg

Not really much price difference there if we discount the value and organic options.

  • My mum gave me a good laugh on this subject, I asked her if she had watched the programme and she rolled her eyes and said in truly superior mum-voice 'Surely, surely anyone with a clue should know about this anyway and be buying organic for their health as well as the animal welfare'! She then had some things to say about a woman in asda who had 3 screaming kids and her trolley was full of cherryade and chicken nuggets but I was too busy laughing to hear it all. Bless her heart she is right but she is so sarky I am surprised she hasn't got a slap from someone in the supermarket yet!!!

There were none in my Co-op this morning either, just the intensively reared ones with the lovely country pictures on the wrapper.
  • Just been having a look at other threads and thought you might find this useful website. just type in your postcode and it does the rest, it searches for local and organic food sources. www.BigBarn.co.uk. - hope it helps those of you in search. Free range had pretty much sold out in our neck of the woods today.
