You could learn how to make your own pies, soup etc. It can't be that hard and will be much better for you.
I already make my own soups and stews and a couple of years ago, when I was off work for 16 weeks I made pies and sausage rolls. OK, I'm a man and bought ready to roll pastry, but they turned out great.0 -
I watched last night and was shocked to see the waste you can read more and sign the campaign on:

oh absolutely, and if i was really craving a chicken and mushroom pie this is what i would do, i'm a reasonably good cook already that this wouldn't faze me. (i tend to buy the frozen stuff to give me a break, saturday night is my "off" night, which is why i go for frozen pizza. lol.) my point was more towards the budgeting side of things, and the shift its going to take in terms of shopping, and how a lot of people just won't be able to make that shift, either because of budgetary problems or time problems (or both!).
in my case, i'm trying to eat more healthily anyway, which is part of why i am eating more veggie food, but also because i've made a conscious decision: if i can't afford "happy" meat, then i won't eat meat. I'm starting with chicken & eggs, and over time will slowly - as i source alternatives - apply it to all meat and animal derivatives. Its much harder than it actually sounds!!

I've decided as a result of the Hugh's Chicken Run programme that where ever possible I will try to buy freerange chicken and eggs. However I went to the supermarket today and could find absolutely nothing. Not even a section for it. I then went to Sainsburys and there were about 5! How is anyone supposed to change their ways if the product isn't there????
Can anyone tell me the best place to buy them as I really want to avoid the cheap chickens if possible in future.Mortgage free wannabee -
Total mortage (approx) £70,041
Hoping to make overpayments very soon!

I posted the other day that I could not find any either. Like you not even a space for them even if they had sold out!
Maybe the supermarkets are getting there own back and not having any!0 -
Hi all, I watched Hugh and Jamies programmes this week and decided I would never buy caged / battery chickens or eggs again. Now I have to admit that I do have some in that I bought last week and cannot bear to see food wasted so I am going to use them up for dinners at work this week but after that NO MORE!
anyway, I went to do my weekly food shop at Netto in Rochdale and there were no caged/ battery eggs on sale at all, just free range at £!.19, well worth it. Given that Netto only had a small input on Jamies show I wonder if they had decided to take the other eggs off sale anyway?
(:T if they have).
I'll keep you informed...................doing what I do best...trying!!-- lainey :j

Personally I'm vegan due to the raising of animals, the way they are treated and their short lives which I do not see as right.
Dairy cows are slaughtered usually at the age of 5 as they are no longer profitable to the owner and can live to 25 years old! Not only that but their offspring if male are either headed for the veal industry when weeks old, going to be animal food or just killed. If the offspring is female it's most likely going to follow the life of it's mother - purposefully being impregnated time after time so humans can use most of the milk (in England some of the milk intended for the calves does go to them if veal but all the mothers milk should be available to the calves).
About 75% of egg-laying hens are battery and the rest are the other options. At the end of the day unfortunately when it’s talking about the masses there isn’t much difference in them. Free range and organic egg-laying hens may have option to go outside but some of them are never able to due to the amount and the lack of openings for them to go through. As Jamie Oliver rightly proved most if not all of the male chicks born from before they get to the farm are killed by some method usually gassing and are used in animal food. Even the egg-laying hens are killed when they are no longer profitable. Thankfully some are re-homed but it is such a little percentage when it comes down to it.
When it comes to it the animals breed for any type of food do not live the length of life they are supposed to naturally  . Personally I believe if you can raise it, kill it (or watch it be killed) and then eat it fair enough. It is an animal with a life so needs to be, as other people have said, respected.
My BF and I have been talking in depth about all the matters to do with animals as he eats them and their by products. I am hoping to pursued him to buy organic as the animal would have had the best life (if you can even call it a life). I know he can go hunt an animal, kill it, skin and gut then eat an animal so although I do not like him doing it realise he is not a hypocrite (like my ma who eats meat and the by-product but hates thinking about it all. So much she refuses to watch the programmes about it, grr).
My BF and I are hoping when we get a place of our own later on to have hens/chickens and a rooster and maybe even rabbits that I can have as ‘pets’ until he sees that they are 'otherwise needed'. We will collect the eggs so he can have them from the hens/chickens so that he can have fresh eggs, then meat (from the hens/chickens, rooster and rabbits) that we know came from happy well kept animals. As it stands he get's his meat from the local butchers as I know the animals from them are better treated over all.
Saying everything above I do believe that free-range or organic meat and eggs are a better option for everyone if people do eat it so please do try if you do eat them.I am a vegan woman. My OH is a lovely omni guy0 -
l brought freedom chicken today
3.02 for 2 breast 6.04 for 4 l needed
right next to it the supermarket
had 4 chicken breast for 3.99 bogof (buy one get one free)
8 breast for 3.99
l am on a tight budget but l was still not going to buy the cheap chicken after watching jamie's fd
l made chicken nuggets with 2 breast (normal use 4)
cut up some spuds
and made wedges to bulk the meal out for the kids
with peas/carrots they where full up
the other 2 l used for curry for me and other half
bulk the curry out with loads off veg had in fridge
still got enough curry left for our tea tomorrow
(we usually have none left as l do not put soo much veg in)
price wise it just works out the same as l do not need to be anything for dinner tomorrow for us0 -
l would ask at customer service at the supermarket
the more people that ask will make them realise they need to change :T

But you could have bought the cheaper breasts, put 4 in the freezer and done just the same thing? Then next week you could have done it again with the chicken in the freezer.
How can you say buying the expensive chicken worked out the same as buying the cheaper one simply because you gave your family less chicken! You can buy cheap chicken and give your family less!0
