If I buy a more expensive aerial will I get a better signal?

Options
Hello, another aerial question!

I have just moved into a house and the signal on the TV isn't good. I checked the roof and there is an aerial and the TV is connected to it but the signal still isn't very good.

If I got a better aerial would I get a better signal or are all aerials the same (sorry for being stupid)?

Will I have to get cable to get a good signal? I wish I knew more about these things!

Thanks in advance!

basically 2 types. the standard one and the high gain ones.
but it may be your cable/connections giving the trouble.
what aerials do the neighbours have?
if they have the standard aerial then theres a big clue as to the problem.
    Get some gorm.

It would help if you explained if we are talking normal TV or Freeview?

IE; Is your picture snowy or breaking up?

If your cables are old you could try replacing with satellite quality. My signal was greatly improved just by replacing the fly leads from the aerial to the set and the set to the DVD recorder.

I am talking about just normal TV, not freeview. I am not sure whether the neighbours have normal aerials, will have a look. The picture is very, very snowy.

So, if it is the cables, can I just buy these from a normal hardware store? Will it be obvious which one I need to buy? Will it say satellite quality aerial?

    Thanks for all the advice.

Aerials needn't be particularly expensive, but you need the correct one for your region. It should be a simple matter to look in the local small ads, find a specialist, and have a chat with him. You could in the end save yourself a lot of hassle and disappointment, not to say money. You could always get a few quotes, why not, they should all be happy enough to do that. In the end, if you ascertain exactly what is required, perhaps you could put it up and align it yourself. You have tried looking at others in the district, to see if it is aligned, of course.....

Is the aerial pointing at the same transmitter as the one at your old house?
